The saga started back in april. the flag pole was errected and the union jack was flown. before the concrete had fully dried the police arrived and told us to take it down! why? under which law? nobody had the answers. visited girne police station and asked the same. after going upstairs to the big boss, we were told no problem you can go back and fly it! Today we had a hard morning working, just relaxing this afternoon, on my union jack sunbed in the pool when, guess what? the police arrived and told us to take it down again! why? because their big boss says so!! big boss is from local police station. so the regime has spoken YOU WILL NOT FLY THE UNION JACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now we live in a tc village , most people here don't speak english so we flew our union jack so that our friends can find us. Nothing more, nothing less. i have telephoned a friend who is a policeman elsewhere on the island to find out if there is a law regarding this? what will happen if we fly it again? we usually sit back and let things go, but if they want to take our union jack away, what will it lead to next? our e.u passports maybe? is the british national anthem banned as well? and what ever you do don't mention the queen! welcome to the racist trnc!

Littlenige I am unsure what you mean about the johny come lateleys to the union. I can only assume that you are possibly refering to Scotland joining up with Englandshire, Wales and N Ireland to form UK. You are slightly missinformed. In actual fact your Queen Eliz of Englandshire, a Tudor, unable to produce an hier, apon her death the Englanders crown was passed to King james VI of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scotts, a Stewart, who adopted the title of King James I of UK. So your linage follows from us Scots, not the other way round. This was the Union of the Crowns. Vince

we are not allowed to fly the tc flag as we are not tc's. the turkish flag you will need a licence to fly! the roc flag and the e.u flags are both arrestable offences. so we are told. my teenage son has a pair of very shabby underpants, so i think we will put them up the flag pole instead. unless anyone knows there is a law against it. lol. i'm sure there must be somewhere! so if anyone is looking for our house ,we are the ones flying the shabby boxers.

This place seems to get more ridiculous by the day. They complain about discrimination, embargoes and isolation, yet discrimate against others and enforce ludicrous 'laws' that do nothing to endear them. I can only imagine the uproar in London if many of the TC's living there were discriminated against in such ridiculous ways. I think you should put it up again!

I was taught that the Union Jack (or whatever you like to call it) is made up of the flags of all the United Kingdom, i.e. England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland. Have you ever looked at it closely? We share our saint with the Greeks; St. Andrew. When the London government rejected the claim (through the male line) of the Stuart heir, Charles Edward Stuart, (the bonny prince) they opted for the female line (!!??) through Elizabeth of Palatinate, who was Protestant. So we got fat German Georges (no harm to them) but the last of the Stuarts was Queen Anne. Now, why do male lines again still take precedence in this day and age? They are hardly likely to lead at the head of any army these days.

Any one caught wearing Union flag shorts, should be made to take them down! Some brits can not help the "bulldog" mentality and like to plant the flag where ever they go. If you are lucky enough to live in a beautiful village and neighbours are unable to give directions to all your visiting friends then why not fly a pair of M&S "Y" fronts from the pole and this would indicate where you are. Neighbours may well see it as a slap in the face to them, as one or more are continually calling the Police to take it down. Have a look when you go through Aya Napa as they have hundreds of Union flags flying to attract visitors. And as for the national anthem....leave it out....we do not even stand up for it in England. For kids to start blurting it out after the homeland one was done was an insult to the school. Grow up, or better still get back t o England and see if you can get the head teacher to have it sung at every morning assembly. I bet you do not even know the 2nd verse of the National Anthem!!….or better still when St George’s Day is??........23rd April.

Can't believe some of the rubbish on this posting. Rocky is right, it's a Union Flag unless it's on a ship , where a flag is called a Jack. I think it's totally wrong for anyone to try and replicate their nationality in another country- many of us complain [quite rightly] about those who come to the UK and won't accept our customs etc. I may [well do actually] hate the Aussies in cricket and rugby, but if I lived there, I would support them. i don't have a problem with a dual nationality, but if somewhere is good enough to live, then you should support the place and their customs and teams etc. When we go to Cyprus, we make a point of going to places out of the way, not specifically to avoid Brits, but to try and soak up some of the culture. I try and learn a few Turkish words and hope to improve my language skills. I can honestly say that apart from the rampant beaurocracy of the place, we have met nothing but warmth and politeness from the Turkish people of NC. I don't accept being discriminated against, but equally it's for us to try and learn the language and customs of the country where many of us have purchased a property. I'm proud to be English but it might help some of us to have an arrogance bypass, and try to fit in as guests or fellow nationals in NC. For the avoidance of doubt [and to save Jakki getting any stick], this is Arthur

Respecting the culture of the country in you are guests is in my opinion of paramount importance. However retaining your national identity, is of equal importance. I will always raise my glass for the loyal toast, and stand in awe of a raised union flag! For the avoidance of doubt, how many ex pats live in overseas lands, but still look to the National Health Service, for their healthcare needs? Shameful, wyn

Don't disagree Wynyardman. A balance between pride in one's native land and respect for anywhere one goes is absolutely correct. Proud to be English and have a Cross of St George on my numberplate, rather than the EU flag. I got fed up using a GB sticker when going abroad, and seeing "Ecosse" and "Pays de Galles" on other cars, so I thought I'd have the flag of someone born in Turkey on my car!

But I do dislike scots who do not support other British teams in europe or World trophies also I dislike english people (Im english)) who support any team or side who is opposing a Scotrtish side. Regretably most of these are moronic fottball supporters.(and Andy Murray) I always support(from my armchair) Rangers and Celtic whoever they play in europe although of course I will not support Rangers anymore this year. Thats even better than the scots. |

musin, we live close to bogaz (girne area). we live in a tc village, so jakki i look forward to seeing you when your off the beaten track so to speak. just ask for the "english" at bogaz police station, i'm sure they will direct you as they don't have much else to do. anyone who knows us, knows we are not the british bulldog type, but i do like my flag and it helps people find us. we have many tc's friends who are disgusted with the situation as well. there is more to this flag than meets the eye. when the trnc team cetinkaya, played luton town and the game got stopped last year. my hubby and his friend were the people they used in the newspapers pictures, which went all over the world. showing the suffering of the trnc in sport. so it was okay when they wanted to use their pics and our flag for political means but if my friends need to find me then thats not allowed. show them your understanding and support! and thats how we have been repaid.

Rocky I meant post 33, (it could apply to 38, but let the Welsh defend their own!) I am not really into football, and all the petty behaviour that goes with it. Everyone I know here in Scotland is disgusted with Rangers fans at Manchester. When we lived near Manchester they supported United, & when we came to my country they supported Celtic, as it was the best team at the time (still is, they would say) But, no, we are not R.C! I do believe the Irish flag was flown at Celtic matches in the past (?)

young blitz: "no it is a english school i went to not a cypriot school" Not your fault buddy but it's a scandal that the Turkish authorities tried to indoctrinate kids by making them sing a foreign anthem. I hope it's been banned now. It's as bad as the flags. That goes for the south as well. The Nazis did that kind of thing in the countries they invaded.

Point I think Firestarter is making, what is the reason he is not allowed to fly the flag.? I see plenty of Turkish flags, and not all flying alongside TRNC flags. Oh and by the way, next time anybody is in Germany,go to a Turkish or Yugoslav apartment block and see the flags on balconies etc,and doesnt present a problem. As is constantly said in UK, you would think the police had better to do. Just had a thought, what if the bold Gary R decided to fly the flag, would it come down? Aye Right! Rocky, There is no way you support Rangers or Celtic!

Rocky: Please read my post properly before you decide to embark on a haggis hunting, 'tossing' mission...maybe that's what you were doing instead of reading my post properly. I didn't mention anything about oil! I was merely responding to littleniges post (post 18) about what the Scots had brought to the table over the years; BESIDES North Sea Oil! Plus "blue and white face paint and 007".. There, I put the quotation marks in for you. Whilst we took a time out from hunting haggis and decided to invent the radar, what would you "not even have know was there"? Oh yeh...that's it...bombs..bombers and more bombs, thus saving the seat of your English government. Very seldom do you go into a guest house in the tourist regions of Scotland and find that it isn't English owned, that being the case...what are they doing there? If England's best as 'you state'. I'm not slighting England here, I'm merely defending my little nation! PS: A working career in Banking Finance? what would your chosen vocation be if it were not for the fact that a Scotsman pioneered retail banking, savings banks and the Bank of England, oh not forgetting the decimal point? Phylray: roughly five came from the touristy tea cloth, I didn't bother with the rest as they didn't have the same impact. I mean marmalade can't really compete plus it's got bits in it...and I hate bits...

Yeah, whaes like us? Think the story was of marmalade -from the French mer malade - cure for sea sickness (apparently). All the world (except the English, and I am half English) are so jealous of us because they have lost their vitality, for want of a better word. Slainte mhath.

Pike I do not agree that it is a scandal that they sing Turkish national anthem in school asemblies here in N.Cyprus because they know they owe their existance and nationhood to Turkey. I have never heard you condemn the terrorists of Eoka who committed horrendous atrocities here. Long live Ataturk who brought Turks to the modern secular state. Look to the postings of your Greek extremists.

We always support the underdog. That is British, as I am, and proud to be Scots too. From a warrior race, father ,grandfather fought in 2 world wars to keep our islands free.Married into a warrior race, yeah. But gentleness is stronger than anything. See how the snowdrop comes.....

talla of course you are correct I was forgetting my history of the savings banks it was a Dr Duncan wasnt it?...where is the savings bank now though some of these Scotish things dont last like Rangers in Europe? its hidden in in LLoydifax or Hallilloyds.I guess the nearest savings insitution to what Dr Duncan initiated would be the credit unions. Thank you for stimulating my brain well the historic section anyway

Rocky- Your reference to Hallilloyds. Did you mean haemorroids? Or are you referring to piles of cash? Arthur

we would like to thank all our tc friends for their help regarding our bayrak. unfortunatley the decitions stands we are not allowed to fly our flag. i have been told that someone from the army was in the village earlier this week. maybe this explains why the powers above have made a stand on the situation.
