Please can anyone tell me the best place to buy a submersible pump to pump water from a swimming pool pump room. I am going over to the South tomorrow so wondered if I would be better to buy one here or over there. Also an idea of price would be useful. I have looked on the Amazon website and they seem to start at around £40...... thanks

Like many things the more you pay the better you get. Better quality available in the South. Try to avoid a cheap one with a plastic impeller as it can soon be destroyed by grit in the sludge. Best to keep the base of the pump slightly off ground level and mop up the inevitable gritty residue. Never continue to run the pump once it sucks air as well as water. Look for a pump with a good "lift" ie over 3 metres to try and avoid having to backfill the hose with water to get an initial flow.

Buy a 'Draper' with float-switch in [new] 'Homebase' - that's what I did.

I recently bought a deep well submersible pump from Genc [next to Unwins] - the manager gave me a 1 year signed guarantee. After using the pump 4 times [in as many weeks], it packed up. Now, Genc refuse to honour the guarantee, saying I restricted the pump because of the 3/4" dia. of the outlet hose. The 'starter box' of this [Chinese] piece of junk is fitted with an overload protection switch - so Genc are talking bullshit, just so they can wriggle out of their obligation. You just have to write such things off with a wry smile and remember: 'This is TRNC!'

Judyr. The pump I have now has lasted over 4 years and runs 1 hour on and one hour off 24/7. It cost approx £90 sterling and followed a whole series of pumps bought in the North which all failed within weeks. It came from a shop in the precinct of Orphanides in the South but I believe that shop has now closed. However, past Orphanides on the right and, straight across the large roundabout which is under the motorway to Larnaca, after a few hundred yards there is a road to the left from where can be seen the start of a large industrial/commercial park. There are general stores there which have a good stock of pumps including the type of pump which you seek. Having read Tenakoutou's message I imagine there is now a manager with a malfunctioning pump arrangement deposited in his rectum !
