Political parties and trade unions in Turkish Cyprus expressed frustration Friday with Turkey’s appointment as its ambassador to the north of the island of grant-maker Halil İbrahim Akça, the target of protests there Jan. 28.



The appointment of Akça to replace Kaya Türkmen is considered a sign that the Turkish government plans to continue tight fiscal policies that provoked demonstrations on the island, and subsequent tension between Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot administration.



“Ankara has appointed a figure who is highly questioned on the island. Ankara’s attitude seems like a punishment of northern Cyprus. Turkey is practicing an eye-for-an-eye policy toward northern Cyprus,” Mehmet Hasgüler, an associate professor at the European University of Lefke and advisor to Turkish Cypriot President Derviş Eroğlu, told the Hürriyet Daily News &
