to all went over to NC last week to take handover of 118 also to sort elec and bank account etc whilst i was there. SWB came to my hotel took me to site made me dinner, drinks made sure were looked after whilst at SWB during the snagging process i cannot explain in words how good SWB/RMS were during my visit as i work on many large residential sites back home and have never seen this kind of service provided before by a developer or manangement company to the clients they were spot as i had never visited before and was like a lost soul before i met up with andy/edith. The visit to kiptec electric was a disaster nobody would or couldnt speak english so after a couple of hours trying to sort things i was basically hushed out of the office with no success of getting electric arranged FIRSTLY they had moved the goal post in changing the rules as from last week and do not inform anone including SWB that they had to go down first nd then i had to follow up after them SECONDLY trying to get things done without speaking turk was almost impossible task so the following day SWB arranged for me a interpritor and also they came along which took up half a day to try and get this sorted so help was at hand. the visit with everyone went almost to plan all the paperwork was sorted in the office on he lefthand building so we were told to go to office next door and pay the meter arrangement bill and get it processed to be installed so off we went to the offie next door only to be told they dont now anything about SWB site and to go back to other office at this point it was about 100 degrees and bloody hard work so of we went to other office to be told it would several days for them to give the forms to office next door so this killed any chance of arranging elec. The only option left for me was to give POE to RMS and get them to arrange elec for me in my abasence within 10 mins RMS turned up took me to to a legal guy who arranged POE for me to let them arrange elec how good is this for service when these people are very, very busy with completions and trying hard to finish off the site to drop everything and help me in a situation i had NO CONTROL OVER due to kiptech being hard work and not helping the situation at all. all i can say after my visit is i would recomend soon a you arrive arrange for RMS sort your elec as you could waste two days of your time and still go home without doing what you came for in getting you elec up and running. SO A BIG THANK YOU TO RMS/SWB FOR ALL THE HELP DURING MY VISIT AND FULLY APPRICATE EVERY MINUTE THEY PUT ASIDE TO HELP ME.

I am not going to comment on the way Kibtek do things but for anybody to expect them to speak English is rediculous. The official language of TRNC is Turkish.

Your posting was in English but lacked any sort of punctuation, sentence structure or correct spelling.

If you have such problems with your own language, how do you expect Kibtek employees whose first language is Turkish, to know what the hell you are talking about?

And what the hell does the temperature have to do with it? Presumeably you bought here with the temperature in mind.

elko 2 english is an international language and was spoken in Cyprus long before you were conceived. I am not sure that the previous comment was criticising the fact that the officials did not speak english he was merely pointing out a fact

Lemtich it appears that most people who have bought in NC or who are buying appear to struggle with English themselves so it could be down to education ot lack of it or the fact that after a few glasses of wine spelling seems less important or is it impotent

sweep, dont really understand where you are coming from. The process for registering at Kibtek could not be more straightforward. I did this a couple of months ago and was in and out of the office (Girne) in about an hour.

I dont speak Turkish so was a little apprehensive about the process, but the guy who deals with the meters spoke exellent english and explained everything too me, i just followed his advise and as i said, no problem.

The only annoying thing for me, was i had just missed getting the meter registered at a cheaper rate, it had gone up the day before, but even then the guy who does the registration, made a bit of a joke, by saying he would backdate the application if he could. All in all, a stress free experience. Geoff

Some people do want everything handed to them on a plate... it's what they have come to expect from life in the UK, at home, at school etc... unfortunately everyting here is pretty much do-it-yourself, so you need to "up your game" to the level that enables you to cope with these little set-backs on your own or with minimal help.. otherwise you are going to feel you are swimming against a very strong current.

first step... learn some Turkish... all the other steps will fall into place.

Thanks sweep for your posting - very pleased to hear about SWB and RMS - well done!!

We got speaking to a store owner whilst we were over in NC last week - the store owner was a TC - she told us about the nightmares she has with Kibtek - so it's not just the tourists that have problems - she also told us that she had been on builders electric for years - her electricity bill was three times higher than usual!! She had to a buy spade and got her dad to dig a trench because the electric company wouldn't do it.

We were over last week and had to register at Kibtek, apart from the cost, which was 800 TL, we were in there about 45 minutes between downstairs and office 1 and 3 upstairs, we found it quite amusing, had to pop out and get cash as they don't take credit cards!

They do take credit cards in the Kyrenia office but they charge a fee, possibly 2.3%. There are signs on the wall behind the desks.

Had to sort my electric with Kibtek last time out. OK, there was a lot of going between offices, but they were all helpful, spoke English and got me sorted no problem.

hi there just to clear things up all i am doing is letting everone who uses this site aware of the bad experience i had last week if people spoke english in the offices i went to and believe me i tried every single one of them in there i would not have arranged with swb a interptior as me and the english speaking swb person could not get anyone to speak english this was the first time in NC and thourght it was fantastic including the people who live there i was just letting people know how hard it can be at kiptech for those who were successfull at kiptech well done but i had two hard days in there and still went home without getting it switched on and this was all done with SWB and a turkish speaking person there on our behalf so if some one goes there on there own they might have a hard time so i thourght i would let everyone know.

I do not expect everone to speak english but thourght due to the fact they are welcoming us to there home land and a lot of us are there that someone that day would of spoke english but didnt why i dont know maybe it was just one of those days i suppose it is trial and error on each visit and and i am sure the more you go the easier it gets as you begin to learn how NC operates and the more people that let others know what goes on the less of a shock it would be when these things happen so i am not putting anyone down for not speaking english i am purley making everyone aware of what did happen whilst i was there.

A request to Sweep and others who post, following from Lem's comment.

It is easier to read if you split up your sentences and form short paregraphs.

Please, this is not a criticism just makes it helpful for others. I am sorry I have not read your full post for that reason.

I agree with Ismet, Turkish is the "official" language of this adopted country of ourselves. And as Groucho says above, a few words will win you friends and often you will then find the person you are talking to does speak some English.

Elco2,

True the official lanuage is Turkish, however Turkey is wanting to joing the EEC, how is NC going to manage with all the EEC laws?, I am English and at present trying to learn Turkish, it has got to be a two way street, or is the lack of willing to learn another lanuage to deal with customers just plain ignorence or arogance

RE Ismet : It's my experience that not that many (young) TC's speak English (although the TRNC Tourism Ministry likes to advertise that 'English is widely spoken in TRNC'...), but I know for sure that in Cyprus more TC's speak English than Brits speaking ANY other language than English...

PS. My remark is only about 'speaking English' - when I read this forum I almost have to cry when I see how the beautiful English language is abused by so many.

PPS. You guessed right: English is not my first language...

Our experience was also stress free - apart from the large deposit. I found courtesy and a smile seemed to go a long way and no problem with being understood. Couldn't believe it when the metre was fitted 2 days later.

I think the problem here is that, in order to be understood, one must speak coherent English.

We have the basis of a new game here.

How many errors are there in message 15.

I counted 61, but was losing the will to live by the second paragraph.

As for message 1. I defy anyone to count them. Any takers?

The problem is not with the Cypriot people or government it is with those who come here expecting everything on a plate.

Nobody was invited here, we all came of our own free will knowing the language here is Turkish and the customs Cypriot.

Try reading this article from Daily Telegraph about foreigners in the supposed idle place of Dubai - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/global/main.jhtml?xml=/global/2008/11/21/dubai.xml

Yes, that article is pretty accurate as I recollect having worked in U.A.E.

for several years. True of Dubai, but a few miles from there, in Sharjah

it is a totally different matter. Depends on the Sheikh in charge of the

emirate in question. Personally, as a woman abroad, I had very few

problems, and those I did were mostly from a few corrupt ex-pats.
