Rally Sunseekers International will take place at Dorset, England on 25/26 February 2011.

TRNC will be represented by Pilot Serkan Coşar and Co-pilot Brian Hardie.

Serkan is my son in law and can be found at Smart + Furniture at Çatalköy. I believe Brian lives in Karmi. They had their first training together yesterday in Cyprus. Good luck to them.

Good Luck to the TRNC team, they are rallying in my part of the country, used to live near Ferndown where one of the trilas are held.

I had a look at the list of drivers/co-drivers and it's good to see the words 'North Cyprus' in the listings.

Best of luck to them - bring home a trophy!

RE msg 1, Ismet: (...) I believe Brian lives in Karmi. (...)

▶ No, Ismet. Brian Hardie doesn't live in the previously Greek speaking Cypriot village of Karmí - he lives in Karaman. The official Cypriot Turkish name for this village. If your son in law thinks he promotes this part of the island driving for TRNC, his father in law could consider to use the official Cypriot Turkish names for towns and villages.

Nit pick! So is it Girne or Kyrenia? Call Karmi or Karaman what you will.

As to the rally, should be fab. A close friend was there yesterday taking a look at the trial. So Elko wasn't there? Shame they could have met? Or did they? I am assured that Serkan is a great driver with 10 years experience, with Brian having had 30 (giving his age away). Brian feels they have a good chance of winning as he has great respect for Serkan. Wouldn't it be a fab thing for North Cyprus (or should I call it The TRNC?) if Serkan wins.

What's in a name? A rose would smell as sweet - and Karmi /Karaman would look as good, and Girne/Kyrenia would be as historical, and Serkan can go into the Guiness book of Records for doing something great for NorthCyprus/TRNC.

Go boys, go!

▶ It's Girne (it used to be Kyrenia). It's Karaman (it used to be Karmí). I can't help it that you don't know the facts in 2011. It's widely taken as a political statement to use the previous Greek names of villages - you may not care, but I do.

P.S. It's TRNC (or KKTC in Turkish) and it used to be the Republic of Cyprus. Or don't you care either in this case?

My friend Dutch, point taken but I live in Famagusta, so that is the name in English. I consider Karaman as the Turkish name and Karmi as the English name. I am happy to call Girne-Kyrenia but I will never call it Gerenia or something like that. The same goes for Nicosia but never Lefkosia.

Your choice DC! But ask the people in the tourist industry the most popular venue in North Cyprus - yes, it is KYRENIA. Greek, innit! But Girne does not get used. And as Kyrenia is also used politically tokeep a bit of a balance, I don't think that one Dutchman can dictate to everyone as to the terminology they use. I have many Turkish Cypriots friends who live in Kyrenia and call it Kyrenia, because that is where they were born and raised and sitll live. So, who am I to use terminology contrary to those whose country it is.

So, please DC stop dictating to everyone what they should say, how they should say. How they think, and what they should think, and allow them to say and do just as you like also to do.

By the way, what walks do you advertise, I can't remember. Is it Girne or Kyrenia??????

RE msg 8, Maz: (...) So, please DC stop dictating to everyone what they should say, how they should say. How they think, and what they should think, and allow them to say and do just as you like also to do. (...)

▶ Calm down. Check with the Ministry of Interior, mapping Department, Nicosia (phone number or address available on your first request). I've been there and was told the names of villages/town as DECIDED by the Government of TRNC. From your previous replies to my posts I' wouldn't be amazed if you know better.

RE msg 8, Maz: (...) By the way, what walks do you advertise, I can't remember. Is it Girne or Kyrenia?????? (...)

▶ Like I tell every participant: the walks are in old, once walled Kyrenia. You may not know it, but there is no medieval Girne. Does it hurt to shoot yourself in the foot?

P.S. Using more than one question mark is an error in the English language.

You are undoubtedly very knowledgeable but you often are very annoying in your style of posting. Would it not be better to disseminate the wealth of information that you have in a more positive way? I fear if not that the style of delivery may obscure the message.

Glad you found the time to WRITE your message. However, there are times when you obviously do not have the time to READ messages, with abusive remarks*, that definitely should be removed or closed at once.

What is it with this person, you read an interesting thread and "boom" he comes in again and ruins the thread. Is it the afternoon drink ,then waking up after a kip and getting off the settee the wrong way or is the male menopause???? Whatever it is, deal with it, everyone knows what everyone is talking about.

Thanks Harold and thanks Maggie and Bernie. I personally find DC's contributions extremely annoying and unnecessary. I do not read his postings for that very reason, and then he cuts across those I wish to read.

I am 100% behind this Rally and I am sure Serkan wants to know that hundreds of people are too. His contribution to North Cyprus is fantastic, and without doubt will do far more for morale and status of this much maligned and misunderstood place than any rude contribution by DC - who, incidentally, has little 'right' to criticise contributions from English native tongue contributors. What a pity we can't criticise his Double Dutch (or single).

Go for it Serkan. You and Brian have us all behind you. Hope you win.

We all look forward to hearing all about it! May luck and success be yours!

Oh dear. Just looked at the YouTube BRT news item. Now there is a beaut of misuse of words and spelling. Not many people know this.

The co-driver is - wait for it - not so much your very own Brian Hardie, but indeed an unknown - BRAIN HARLEY!

Nice one. Take a look - it is written clear in the subtitles.

Maz,

If you could understand Turkish you would find a few more mistakes. They are not professional at all. Whenever I read something in papers that I am involved in there is always something wrong. I am used to it.

So sorry Ismet. I thought it was just the English media here that made the mistakes. The use of English here, in the main, is a joke as well as an insult. Didin't realise that they abused their own language as well.

It seems as if here the normally constant talk about weather can easily be replaced with constant reference to linguistic abuse.

So how does one get some professionalism into things here?

Maz asked: "So how does one get some professionalism into things here? "

In the Public Sector i.e. the government sector, no professionalism at all. The private sector is much more promising.

When I deal with a government office, usually I get my way when they see that I mean business and I may take them to court over the matter. They can feel that I do not make empty threats. the way they treat most people is unbelievable. They are neither civil nor servants

Amen, Ismet. Keep fighting. As 'yabanci' we have little chance. The only way we can succeed is to employ lawyers, and they are usually the only ones who gain. So thanks for folk like you who stick to their guns and try to introduce better standards.

Maybe first lesson could be getting them to understand the true meaning of 'servants' and 'civil'???

C'mon lets keep on the post here. Rather than bickering and Some guy that has to learn the English language does not have brackets around words or phrases or (...).

Let's have some details. What car?? What class? Where can we see this? How can we watch the progress?

I am sure Ismet caN answer all that. All I know is that it is a Subaru, 300hp, 2 litre, and that the rally will be all day on the Saturday from Bournemouth around the New Forest etc, etc, with 110 cars taking part. Will probably be on Engl.ish TV news. Oh yes, there will be four female drivers all in their 20's, so I am looking for a sponsor for me for the next one, but I don't have a car or any exerience!

But get all the facts from Elko2.

I live in Karmi, the name the local cypriots ALL use. Karaman is the Turkish name, and this is NOT TURKEY, even though Turkey is doing its best to try and run it. Why is it OK to use the name Bellapais, and not the Turkish equivalent?? (I have used 2 question marks to emphasise my question.)

Sunseekers are luxury motor yachts built in Poole in Dorset. These are sometimes referred to as gin palaces. Sunseeker is very important to the Dorset economy which, outside the bubble that is Sandbanks, is not a wealthy county. I imagine this event will be based in Poole Harbour.

Thanks to the last two messages. Firstly to Claircat44 for clarifying the nomenclature of THAT village in the hills, and secondly to Sourbrandy for telling us how we can follow the action. What kind of magnifying glass will we need to spot Brian???? (oops, 3 question marks - for literary effect, and I am English, so it is allowed!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Here are part results for Serkan Cosar-Brian Hardie

http://beta.djames.org.uk/results/competitor.php?EventID=73&m=17&CompetitorID=55

Not too bad for someone who did not have a chance for a test drive previously on this route. Apparently the last chance was Tuesday anbd they arrived on Wednesday. As far as I can make out, he came 15th in the first stage and is now in overall tenth position.

In the second run through of Stage 8, Serkan was over a minute quicker than this morning. He is obviously driving very carefully and wants to finish. Let's see how he does in the rest of the second run throughs. More power to them.

Not quite, they are 6th so far of the cars to go through the stage. As far as I can see they are 4th in class in and after stage 8 they were 9th overall.

Serkan and Sölen are back in Cyprus and I have just spoken to Sölen on the phone. They were the centre of attention and they did a very good job advertising north Cyprus. Of course the fact that everybody knew co-pilot Brian Hardie and very popular helped greatly. Thank you Brian. I hope this event is given maximum publicity in the media. They should make full use of the pictures and movies you brought with you.

Ismet, That's a very good analysis, but you should be directing these comments and recommendations to the Government. We want to go back next year and make an even bigger impact.

Lord Ken Maginnis, Kemal Koprulu and John Okaes of Embargoed! and Lib Dems were overwhelmed by the reception and coverage that North Cyprus received. You could almost have thought that the rally was organised for North Cyprus - from the exposure that we received.

For a first and given the handicaps, Serkan, for his first time in very slippery British forests did a fantastic job. Brian says, having done this rally countless times, that these were the worst conditions that he'd ever experienced.

THUMBS UP SERKAN FOR NEXT YEAR!

The best advert for Cyprus at the moment (sadly) is the fosters advert

this will create more awareness than any 2 bit rally

Msg 43 - philbailey. What Foster's advert?

Why do you think exposure on an international event and one of the biggest motorsport events in the south of England is two-bit?

If you are going to be disparaging about people's efforts to give NC a stage, perhaps give a little more information.

There is a current fosters advert that a guy calls his friends from Cyprus

it is on most channels in England non-stop

people who watch motor-sport do exactly that ,they are more interested in the driving/cars

the people who watch mainsteam tv are the people more likely to book package holidays to the sun

I did not see the rally televised or any tv advertising for Cyprus directly

that is why I said the fosters advert is better advertising it appeals to the masses (sad but true)
