CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.



The ass and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute's director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.



The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute's corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his ass thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

This story reminded me of what happened in the village of Vadili in the late fifties. Two GC constables on patrol duty had nothing better to do and decided to tease the old mean who was coming towards them on a donkey. They stopped him and asked about the licence plate of the donkey. As the constables explained it was a new law and the old man did not seem bothered. So the constables were going to write a fine for him! They asked him whether he would like the fine to be in his name or in the name of the donkey and without any hesitation he sai he would like the fine to be in his name. The contables suggested to him that it would be wiser to have the fine in the donkey's name because then it would be impossible to collect it and he would get away free. But no, the old man was adamant that the fine shuld be in his name.



In exasperation one of the constables asked why he insisted that the donkey should not get the fine.



The old man answered: "I want my ass to have a clean record becasue who knows, one day he may apply to become a constable like you"!!!



They got the message, the old man had the greater wit.



Until recently one of the said constables was a taxi driver in Limassol.
