QUIZ (08): Again I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 20 squares...

▶ The two questions: WHO are they and WHERE did he rule?

▶ I'll fill one or two squares at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than six empty rectangles to fill!

▶ Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info in this thread... But playtime is over - this is serious business now...

▶ The prize in this Quiz: an invitation for two for an "Historical Walk in 'your choice"".

OK, here we go again: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... I hope to see new nicknames in this thread...

▶ ▶ ▶ Click this (shortened but safe!) link to view the Quiz-picture: [ http://is.gd/Nfst69 ].

P.S. Level of difficulty of this Quiz: MEDIUM...

It is thought to be a portrait of John of Lusignan, brother of Peter I of Cyprus.

John was Lord of Pelendry, Regent of Cyprus and the Titular Prince of Antioch and the woman is thought to be his second wife Alice of Ibelin.

The question mark in the clue “Is zij zijn vrouw..?” got me thinking further.

The painting in the picture is in the Church of Timios Stavros (the Holy Cross) in Pelendri (Pelendry)

It is thought to be of ‘benefactors’ and thus of John de Lusignan (Lord of Pelendry) and his wife Alice of Ibelin.

It seems however that John also has a mistress called Alix de Gibelet by whom he had a son.

Given that ruling houses in that period arranged marriages within a very small number of families, often their own, for strategic reasons and that they also (again for strategic reasons), would be compelled to choose influential members of the family as godparents to their children, naming the child for that person as both a sign of respect and in an attempt to form some sort of bond between the godparent and godchild, thus hopefully affording the child some degree of patronage and protection, it is no surprise that the same names recur.

Cont..

Cont..

The name Alice seems to be used interchangeably with Alix. John’s mother, second wife and mistress all bore this name.

So, if there is any reason to believe that the painting is of ‘John & Alice/Alix’, who is she?

Mother? (unlikely), Mistress? (possibly) Wife? (probably)

We will likely never know.

I am sure my knowledge of knitting and crochet far outstrips DC's.

European Medieval history? No.

RE msg 8 (& 9 & 10), darrener2: (...) It is thought to be a portrait of John of Lusignan, brother of Peter I of Cyprus. etc etc (...)

What can I say D2? You won the Quiz, again...

But..! In the next Quiz-09 I've changed my tactics... Now it's not going to depend on knowledge, but participants only need a sharp eye for the differences in historic buildings, which occurred in the past century...

EVERYBODY CAN WIN IN THE NEXT QUIZ (or not... ).

Don't worry, tongue was firmly in cheek.
