Hello all !

I have been lurking in the background reading all the posts here before we decide to come to North Cyprus initially for a year.

The only important info I cant find is the cost of medicine there.

Hubby and I have 7 items on our prescription here monthly between us and would like to cost this factor into our budget.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hi Kim,

If you send a list of your medications to me I will find out if they are readily available and the cost.

We get some medicines here which are far cheaper than the UK prescription charge. One of my asthma pumps is difficult to locate and about 40TL (£16). The other is 9TL (£3.60). Of course this goes up and down according to the exchange rate. If you email me on bizarre.guitar@yahoo.co.uk with a list I will check with the chemist and let you know. They 99% medicines at the same set price in every chemist and welcome to the forum!! Helena

Kim, I think that you should also consider visits to doctors. It is cheap here compared to the UK, but there is no NHS system here. I have BUPA International health care insurance (expensive, but well worth it as I found out last year when I had serious medical problems). A doctor visit is approx 40TL and for a specialist approx 80TL

Thank you biggles. Visits to the doctor was on my list and at 40tl a time then thats not too bad.

Can I buy my medication over the counter or do we need a prescription from doctor in Cyprus ?

I will also look at private insurance too.

What doctor(s) do you go to that charge 40tl every one we have been to charges 80tl (used to be 70tl)?

Mind you we have always been very pleased with the medical treatment we have had here so maybe it is better to pay more to get good advice. If you go to the State Hospital the charges are minimal - between 5-20 tl for consultation - & quite often free.

I was just going to a ask the same question. Which doctor for 40 lira./ They are generally 70 to 80 lira, but I've always considered that ok, as they don't rush you, and it is private, so a private doctor in England would be a lot more.

Kim - I suggest you contact Christine (NurseAwful) off board as she has a wealth of knowledge that you might find useful in making your decisions. You are taking a lot of medicines so you need to know if your conditions are best treated in the UK as once you leave the UK getting NHS health care is a little difficult (or sometimes nearly impossible).

Thank you flightholiday. I am in touch with NurseAwful and she is very kindly looking into the cost of my medicine there, as is Helena.

I am hoping the cost is not too much as we have been planning this move for ages now ! Who knows mabye life over there will improve my health ( more sun and less stress ! )

Kim Msg 14 - Chat to Christine about your conditions as she is a live wire in this regard and I'm positive anything you say will be confidential. Better to go out prepared than in a void.

I understand your point about more sun, less stress, local foods etc. all better for you than hibernation in dark, damp UK (as much as I like both).

kimmy, whilst I am happy to go to the chemist and check prices for you, if you have also asked Chris to check the price of medicines, it seem pointless for two of us to do the same!! However, if Chris is busy then if course I will go. Kind Regards.

Thanks for the e mail Chris and for the prices and availability. I have written back with a quick outline of our health problems to ask your advice.

Sorry MrsSnakes and thanks for the kind offer. Now to see the GP about alternative meds !!

Regards

Kim
