Do you have to be a TRNC resident in order to have a savings account?

No Twaddle you do not. Take your passport in and just open an account.

I am getting a better rate from Creditwest than Garanti who I use for credit cards and direct debits.

There are deals to be had check out all the rates in one place http://www.ncmoneyguide.info you will need to register the go to the “bank rates” tab. Remember that not all banks are the same and further information about banks and banking in the TRNC can be found on the nc money guide.

Sorry but the only monthly account i have is with garanti for the credit card etc. All others are 12 months and on these Creditwest are a long way ahead of garanti and Iktisat who were as good until early last year.

The rates do depend on the amount in total you have in that bank but Garanti couldn't match C/W even if all was transferred to them.

Incidentally the best freebie is the Garanti Shop n Miles credit card. This pays you air miles with Turkish which have really added up quickly for me.

david9, just for you and anyone else who is not confident enough to use google.

Turkish Bank : http://www.turkishbank.com/english

Credit West Bank : http://www.creditwestbank.com/index.php/en/personal/interest-rate.html

Garanti Bank : (I could not find actual rates on display but here is a calculator to find out how much you could get for a deposit in several different accounts, I am hoping that they are taking the 10% tax fee into account or it is a very low rate) http://www.garanti.com.tr/en/personal_banking/deposit_and_investment/deposit_accounts/time_deposit_account/calculator.page?#calcContent=UID4b3b430

Iktisat Bank : (Needed to translate this by opening it in a translator but can see the rates in Turkish if you know what to look for) http://www.iktisatbank.com/SPhERE/cPortal/iktisat/layouts/content.jsp?pOTmplt=rb&pName=Bankacılık İşlemleri > Bireysel Bankacılık > Mevduat Ür?nleri > Vadeli Hesap Faiz Oranları

Hope it helps, Paul
