This is a number given if you cannot get in touch with family or friends and you think they might be injured. 0800 779 997

My family have said it's like world war three, sitting in the dark with only a torch in whats left of their house, they are at least all alive. It's complete devastation.

According to this website the number supplied is correct http://www.civildefence.govt.nz/

However although it looks like a UK number I think it is in NZ and should have the international code of 0064.

So the number from outside NZ should be 0064800779997

Please check yourself before placing a call in case I have made a mistake and good luck to all those out there.

Rigsby,I was given this number this morning,I didn't need to use it as I managed to ring a landline number on skype and spoke to my family.

Thanks Kiwikid............I knew someone would come up with another phone number,to be honest I was in such a flap I didn't think to check it out,it's just what I was given.

kiwikid: I experienced the 1968 Inangahua earthquake - I was then living in Mount St. Nelson.

This latest shake is indescribably tragic..............

Most people thought that Wellington was well overdue for a big shake, but it hasn't happened yet, thank goodness.

My Mum is there, thankfully she is ok. She had already lost her house in the last earthquake in september. Talked to my sister, news there was saying that death toll likely to rise to up to 1000, though now it looks as it will be 200-300. CHristchurch will never be the same after this, This is my home town and it is just heart breaking to see the damage. A very sad day for New Zealand.

My daughter felt the shock down in Dunedin, she had to rush off quickly as they were flying patients by Helicopter to Dunedin hospital and she was "on call"

I thank God that my husbands family is all in the north island. Christchurch was such a beautiful place, I loved it and the people as soon as I set foot there. Here's hoping the well known Kiwi resilience will help more people survive than the anticipated figures seem to think.
