We recently adopted another stray kitten - the usual story - chucked out of a car near our home on New Year's Day. She was in a very debilitated state - now, I'm pleased to say, 'bouncing around with naughtiness'!

She had, however, a problem which seemed impossible to cure - an infection of ear mites, which was driving her crazy. On local advice, we firstly tried to treat the ears with olive oil - useless - don't listen to that one!

We then went to a local pharmacy who sold us a product [antibacterial/antifungal] for dogs and cats [ear drops] called 'Canaural' - it didn't work.

Finally, we went to the South [Nicosia] vetinary clinic, on the opposite side of the dual carriageway to 'Jumbo Toys' and was advised to use ear drops called 'Surolan', quite expensive at €10 for 15ml - but it works, and 'Miss Pussy' has stopped trying to tear her ears off in aggravation and frustration.

I hope this information may be useful to CY44 forum readers.

the (expensive) white para band collar (for dogs) covers ear mites as well as other nasty bugs etc, don't know if there is a cat one, but its lovely to know that you care about her.

Re. message 1 - Please note:

It is important, when applying the ear-drops, to make sure the drops reach the 'Timpanum' [eardrum] as mite infection goes very deep in the ear(s). However, take care not to shove the nozzle of the [plastic] bottle too far into the ear and cause damage to the eardrum. You know what it's like when you push a cotton bud too far into your own ear!

Also, if possible, make sure you massage the animal's ears well after application, so that the medication has a chance of penetrating the animal's natural ear wax and works through to the skin where the mites have 'dug in'.

Apparently, there is an injection available from vets for this problem, but I understand that this treatment can only be administered by a vet. Perhaps someone could shed more light on this method and advise us....... thank you.

Useful advice Tenakoutou, the Surolan does work, we use it in our kennels here but equally as good is DEXORYL which our vet recommends. As far as we know both only available from south. This product cured one of our rescue dogs who had a chronic ear infection.
