Smokers banned from naming or pointing at favourite brand

In further moves to discourage smoking, the Department of Health have announced a complete ban on naming your favourite brand of cigarette or pointing at them in the newsagents and tobacconists.

‘From now on smokers will have to perform an elaborate round of charades to express their desire to purchase a packet of cigarettes’ explained Jane Shillitoe, Under Secretary of State for Health. ‘For example, ‘20 Benson and Hedges’ would involve flashing both palms twice, then doing a sounds-like hen move, then indicating a sun, then a little cross to symbolise the word ‘and’, and finally a mime which recreates a pair of garden hedges. We expect to reduce smoking across the population, except possibly among mime artists.’

The new restrictions come on top of recent plans to strip cigarette packets of their branding, to hide cigarettes under the counter and to replace vending machines with one-arm bandits which dispense a packet of ten if you line up three pairs of cherries. Areas where smokers gather outside offices are being fitted with sprinklers so that they get wet even when it isn’t raining, and fast burning firework fuses are being added to cigarette papers causing smokers to burn their lips within seconds of lighting up. The government is also bringing in a National Tutting Day, in which non-smokers will be encouraged to express their disapproval at anyone smoking in public by waving the smoke away in an annoying manner.

However, plans to ban smoking altogether were rejected. ‘God no, the income from taxes on cigarettes pays for all the schools and hospitals. We don’t want people to stop smoking’ said Ms Shilletoe; ‘We just want them to feel really bad about it.’

Hi eager.

Just read your message on previous message!

Blimey I don't know how I missed your post.

Sorry dear.

How are you ??

Did you take the plunge?

We stay at the Pia Bella and return to TRNC October, we'd love to meet up again but this time there are 4 drinkers, smaller numbers than Riverside.

Keep drinking the International drinks but NOT all in the same night.

Julie x

Hi Crugs

I knew that little bit of sign language I learnt would come in handy one day, even if its just to buy a packet of cigs, whatever next.? maybe a plain brown envelope.

People (incl me) will buy whether we have to duck under the counter, or go into a shop with a balaclava on.

No one has the right to tell anyone else what to do, its their choice

As an adament anti smoker I agree totally with you smithy.

No I will not say the obvious things of killing yourself etc. but I am totally fed up of all of this state control, even though I live in TRNC, I still pay UK taxes.

If all of this "nanny state" stuff was done away with there would be a sizeable chunk put back into the budget for sensible things......... like what......oh yes, health care, education for 2.

Crazy isn't it that the sort of things you describe smithy were the things that men had to do to get condoms!! LOLOL

Tobacco firms paid huge amounts for endorsements from the stars of Hollywood's "Golden Age".

Industry documents released following anti-smoking lawsuits reveal the extent of the relationship between tobacco and movie studios.

One firm paid more than $3m in today's money in one year to stars.

Researchers writing in the Tobacco Control journal said "classic" films of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s still helped promote smoking today.

I wonder how much Colin Farrell is being bunged?

in the u.k cigarette,s cost around 5£-23p for a pkt of 20 on average, and with

tax at about 4£ per pkt,if you smoke 20 a day over the course of 7 day`s you

pay the goverment about 28£ per week in tax alone.they can`t afford to ban

cigarette,s or tobacco.and where would the extra tax come from if they did.

cyprusishome hi, i must say iv`e never thought of smoking condoms myself

as iv, been told you have to keep the friction up or they go out again,so ill just

stick to my roll up.s.......lol
