Could anyone on here give me any advice on symptoms for Leishmans please, Had to take my 6 month old dog to vets this morning after a weeks course of antibiotics, he is keeping her in as he is so ill, he has said if he has the disease it is very catching especially to children and even with a course of treatment he may not make it. Has anyone had a dog with this, what was the outcome, any information would be helpful as I am beside myself.

Do you want to put your child and yourselves + families in the vicinity at risk. The vet has very wisely warned you - take heed!

Why don't you 'Google' Wikipedia/Leichmaniasis.......after what it tells you, or any number of other informative/warning sites, I hope you'll very smartly make up your mind.

Your dog has been bitten by the carrier, the 'Sicilian Sandfly', from which you, or anyone else can quickly contract 'Sicilian Sandfly Fever', as well as 'Leich.' - NOT PLEASANT!

Even if treated, your dog will always be a carrier - this terrible disease CANNOT be eradicated - BE VERY WARNED!

I have read up on everything and of course would not put my child at risk, unfortunately until the blood tests come back we do not know if this is what he has, I was just wondering whether anyone else's dog had this and the symptoms they had.

With all respect, you didn't mention precisely what your dog's symptoms were/are.

However, personally, I can't get my head around why on earth you would allow your precious child anywhere near any dog you knew to be sick............

So what would you suggest the minute your dog has signs of being unwell you have him put down, for one the vets will not do that here!! and two we were told it was most likely a viral infection which we had treated accordingly, when I asked if it could be leishmania he said it was doubtful. He got worse this morning so we took him straight to the vets which is were he is now, I would not put my child in danger and resent the fact you suggest that, it was only this morning we were told there is a possibility it could be leishmania as he did not respond to treatment, he is staying at the vets this weekend.

Nowhere have I suggested that you deliberately put your child/family at risk, even if you inadvertantly did, and if I was sensitive I would resent your accusation!

I did not contribute to this thread to be argumentative - please accept that!

As heartbreaking as it may be for you in the short term future, your conscience should tell you what's the best course of action.............

Well I am sensitive! this is all very upsetting.....

I did not ask advice as what to do, just for people who have had dogs with this disease to enlighten me incase my dog does have it. Then of course my decision would be made accordingly.....

Here is another [little known to the public] disease that is becoming more of a concern in this region:

hydatid" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Hydatids">hydatid

In New Zealand, every dog owner must have their dog(s) dosed annually against 'Hydatids'.

I think in UK, you refer to 'liver fluke disease'?

Hello Parkview my dog Benson has Leichmania at the moment. He was first diagnosed in November and treatment commenced daily for 1 month on some very expensive liquid medicine which cost £250 for the course. he is now on Allopurinol tablets 300mg twice daily until mid December 2011 as the treatment must continue for one year according to my vet Pertev. He was very unwell to begin with and still is fairly poorly. His whole body broke out in terrible sores, he was lethargic and pretty lifeless for several months, however his energy levels have improved recently. He has still got some nasty sores on his body and his whole mouth is riddled with them. I bathe him in Exmarid shampoo which I brought from England and put Exmarid ointment on his sores periodically, which seems to help. If they are too open I dab them with biokadin which is the non stinging version of iodine.I have 3 other dogs who show no signs of this disease. My email is jackywilson@hotmail.com should you wish to contact me.

Hi Parkview I expect you do feel helpless, at least you are doing the best you can. The vets are really good in N.Cyprus better than the doctors !! Don't feel upset with what some say on here, most of the members are really friendly & give some helpful & knowledgable advice. I hope all goes well for your family & your dog is better soon.

Oh Parkview I feel so sad for you. He is in good safe hands . If anyone can do it Pertev will . I know one of the members here brought her dog back from the brink from this with medication. I pray Raki will be fine. Keep strong xxxxx

Leish is only transfarable by sandfly, is very rear in humans, certantly not fatal and easily treated.

If cought early in a dog, can be treated, the dogs life saved, and lead a normal life.

But be aware the parasite will always be present so you should continue to frontline and paraband the dog

Contact a vet, they are experienced in the treatment of Leish and you will get better advice then any madman forum like this

Hi Parkview. My dog has leishmania. It is treatable but the medicine is expensive. I did quite a bit of internet research on the subject when my dog was first diagnosed and couldn't find any evidence of dog to human transfer. Speak to Pertev when he is back from holiday. Good luck!

Lauvaine/Msg 24: '...couldn't find any evidence of dog to human transfer.'

Of course not - it is a cycle:

The disease occurs when a person becomes infected with any of several types of Leishmania parasites. They spread to people through the bite of female sand flies and can cause different forms of illness, all of which are called leishmaniasis. Cutaneous leishmaniasis affects the skin; mucocutaneous leishmaniasis attacks the mucous membranes in the mouth, nose, and throat; and visceral leishmaniasis (also known as systemic leishmaniasis or kala azar) damages internal organs, such as the liver and spleen.

The sand fly bites and sucks the blood from the infected dog, then bites humans, or other animals - geddit?

Leishmaniasis is not "easily" treated and can in some cases be fatal, ,Listen to Tenakoutou, and read the link in msg25,..this is one occasion were "Ignorance" is most certainly NOT bliss.....This disease is becoming more widespread throughout the Eastern Med and is a Very serious Health Risk!!

Thanks VERY much for your support on this one, Martin - the problem seems to be that just because this disease is extremely uncommon in UK, expats don't want to know, or listen. The problem with this disease is that there seems to be no set incubation period, therefore the microbe(s) may lay relatively dormant in the body of either an animal, or human, until conditions are right for it to manifest itself as identifiable to a doctor, or vetinarian.

Ten, given that the incubation time is not specific ,could that mean that a Re-Homed Dog from a kennel could be a potential "Carrier" or, do you suppose they are tested for the disease before Re-Homing.....??

IF.... my dog has Leishmania then of course there is a chance myself or more importantly my daughter could catch it as I mentioned in my first posting I have been told this by Pertev the vet so nobody is ignoring your warnings, this was not what my first posting was about! anyway until I know from the blood tests there is no point in speculating. It is a fact it stays dormant and there is no long time cure! hence why I was so distressed in the first place in case he has this disease. There have been dogs that have been treated and have lived a healthy life but there are no guarantees. All I wanted to know originally is what personal experiences are with the symptoms etc, as they vary on all the sites I have read. IF he has this disease he was obviously born with it as he is only 6 months old and its unlikely he caught it this time of year. Thank you everybody for your support and information I will take heed of all advice given and act accordingly should the results be positive.

According to what I have read and been told the disease can only be passed on by a sandfly bite ...... and in no other way.

Therefore only if a sandfly bit a dog and passed on the disease ..... then afterwards the fly would then have to bite a person/ or another sandfly bite an infected dog and then bite a person. What are the odds? How many people here in TRNC have leishmaniasis????

Hi Everyone

Please check the website below

http://www.cdc.gov.parasites

According to this site humans CANNOT catch the disease from dogs

To all those who have been kind enough to write on this subject, the disease can only be caught if a fly bites the dog and then bites you, so very low odds.

Unfortunately I have just phoned the vet to see how Raki was doing and was told he had to be put down as he could not stop the bleeding, so I will find out tomorrow hopefully what killed him.

Thank you once again for your kind wishes

Parkview - I am very sorry to hear the outcome to this upsetting saga. The loss, or death, of a much loved family pet is, indeed, heartrending and having recently gone through this experience of having to have our dog 'put down', I can identify with the anguish that you are currently going through.

I am really sorry to hear that your dog did not make it and know how you must be feeling, my dogs are like children to me. I hope that you take some consolation in knowing that you did everything possible to help him. When the time is right perhaps you will have the courage to take on another dog as there are so many here wanting a good home and some TLC. Thinking of you today. Kind Wishes Jacky

Thank you Jacky, we have another dog already who has been with us for 3 years, and although we had Raki for such a short time it has left me feeling like something is missing, he was so young. On a positive note though I would like to praise Pertev, with whom I can only give my upmost respect, he was understanding and sensitive at all times, and did his upmost to save Raki, how lucky we are on this island to have such a wonderful vet.

Oh parkview so sorry to hear your news, it sounds like you did your best for him.

It is possible that your post may help educate other dog owners to avoid the same happening to their loved family member.
