I could not believe my ears when I heard it this morning. Apparently when the civil servants go on strike they get paid half a salary from the government. Anything they can get from their union is extra.

And I left a perfectly socialist country to live in a third world country. What a mistake.

Can we stop having a go at civil service. Just because they sit about palying tavla all day. Perhaps we can introduce it into the olympics. We are bound to win.

ismet abi, I cannot understand why you are so suprised.

For the civil servants in the TRNC it's is all about the money, unfortunately they are so wrapped up in their own little world that they do not have the common sense to realise that they are their own worst enemy !!

They are a waste of space & money, the sooner privatisation begins the better it will be for everyone....

100 % True stonehousepub, "They are a waste of space & money" All they think about their salary at the end of the month and their retirement after 25 years of nothing to show for. Drink COFFEE and RABBIT with eahother or talk to their friends on the phone(If they turn up for workplace(not for work)).

TRNC needs complete change over, get rid of them ALL!!

Elko

I am not surprised. My gripe with a paricular group is, why has it taken them 18 months so far and have not yet come to inspect my property and register it on the land? I have been told that I may have to pay loads of money for them and do it quickly. They've had 18 months so far!

But if Turkey ever withdraws funding, the Civil Servants will very quickly become uncivil as they will get no pay at all. Most people have to earn their money from something which generates money. Whilst I sympathise with what they feel are their rights, I am fearful of long term consequences to the country - the country for which they are supposed to be working towards improving.

I will work that one out in my dreams/nightmares, cos at the moment I am too brain dead to fathom how you can go on strike and be paid - seems like throwing gold nuggets back into the river.

Since half the Civil Service pay is still a lot more than the minimum wage the decent hard working TC's and Turkish people get, what incentive is there for these most uncivil servants to return to work. I road past

Girne District Court yesterday afternoon and saw the picket line 'sitting' outside in the sunshine just nattering away, drinking their coffee and soft drinks and thought to myself, well no change there then except they are sitting outside doing sweet f.a. rather than inside doing s.a. as they do when they are 'working'. Now Ismet tells us that get paid for doing that too. Having a tin barf. Well when their little world implodes, I expect they will blame Turkey for that too. Now where else do they think it is never their fault - could it be in the south??

elko2/Msg 1: This is all the more reprehensible when one considers the ludicrous costs and bureaucratic barriers which are forced on the poor people who are struggling to survive in small business and service industries. Add to that the huge tax burden, import duty and Customs Tariffs, monthly accountants fees, etc., etc., all levied to help to support this annually burgeoning, idle Civil Service and it's no wonder there is no decent inward investment, because most businesses are hardly sustainable, unless you're lucky enough to have some franchise like, for example, 'Coca Cola'. What is the chance for economic growth under such a top heavy system? The answer, of course, is nil, zilch - bugger all!

So the government is subsidising strikes. Now I wonder who is responsible for that? Oh yes, it's the government not the strikers. I'm amazed they don't go on strike permanently and take a part-time job to make up their money to a full salary.

Or more likely, it just isn't true.

Elko said, "I heard it this morning" but from whom? Wasn't the government was it, trying to discredit itself so there is a vote of no confidence, a snap election and all the UBP MPs can retire on their ridiculously high pensions?

Malsancak,

My source is "Advocate Gunes Mentesh". I did question him if he was sure and he was absolutely sure. Then I questioned a civil servant about this and he thought it was correct. "Of course they should get paid. Civil servants have a right to strike, its their human rights. Why should they be punished for using their basic rights. They must have the means to survive even when on strike". This is the prevaling mentality.

Yes, they should have the "Basic Right to Strike", but any salary should be forfieited on striking (Your choice), and any cash reimbursements should come from their unions funds totally.

Your means of surviving whilst on strike is your own choice as is your choice to go on strike but you can't have your cake and eat it at others expense otherwise what is to stop you being permenantly on strike and yet expecting to get a salary?

What do you expect? Every TC in the TRNC has been beholden to Turkey since 1974. Turkey is responsible for leadership in the north. It has provided none and encouraged no enterprise - just a dependency culture, victim status and subsidy junkies.

Some of the best talent in the TC community has evaporated in the brain drain to find a better life overseas. Some enterprising TCs have returned but not enough. Of course, Turkey and her puppets in the TRNC government try and conveniently blame all ills on the "embargo". But that's rubbish. You can get anything you want here if you have the money.

The truth is an artificial state that produces nothing and whose economy is controlled by a foreign country will never succeed. How can you blame the civil servants when they haven't been given any incentives or encouragement apart from having money thrown at them to keep them sweet? What would you do in their position? Damn sure you'd take the money if you had no future.

Groucho - from your last comment I take it you mean the same amount of work will get done but the wage bill will be halved!!

I spoke to an active member of CTP and he told me that the 50% pay on strike is not true. However he said that "warning strikes lasting one day" are on full pay. Whatever!!!
