We are thinking of buying privately a one year old Peugeot 206. Its tax ran out in April 2008 and therefore we would owe 6 months back tax. Will there be any fine due to late payment, or will the tax just run until April 2009?

Secondly the amount on the 2007- 2008 tax disc shows as 711 ytl. Anyone have any idea why it should be so high? According to the new rates it should be in the lowest band. Are new cars subject to any loading on the car tax?

The first tax disc on a new car incorporates various other taxes. The second year reverts to the correct banding and pricing. As regards to "offroading" a car annual car tax is still levied whatever the reason for the vehicle being off the road.

rayz11,

If you own a car it must be taxed, where ever it is kept.

If you buy a car that previous owner has not paid tax for you would be liable for all back tax again where ever it has been kept!

What happens if you buy a second hand car from say a garage it could be on sale for six months or more who pays the back car tax if the car tax is out of date interesting.

discovery,

If you have taken the documentation and the car is now yours - you will have to pay. So check it out with dealer first and if it is out of date get him to pay.
