My buddy asked if he could post something, I said yes go ahead.

Just seen my dad heating up Oxtail Soup. I asked him is it really from an Ox Tail. Do they breed them back home and kill Ox's just to make soup from their tail or are there many Ox's alive without tails. Never seen Ox Meat. He was not very informative. If anyone can tell the tail please.

Yes you really do make oxtail from oxtails, it is a really nice cheap dish. You braise the oxtails which come in small sliced sections there is a lot of bone so you need quite a few. Braise them and serve with mashed potatos, delicious. I have seen them for sale in my local supermarket which is Supreme but not very often.

It's a Dutch invention. They breed ox tails there without an ox. Have you really never heard of Google for a question like yours..?!

▶ [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxtail_soup ]

and try http://www.google.com with "origin oxtail soup" and here's your answer:

Tinned oxtail soup is not made from oxtails according to the list of ingredients but fresh oxtail soup is made from oxtail and are available from Kibet, Tempo and other butchers. If they don't have any, ask when they will be in next and it is normally yarin, ask to have a kilo put by. Cost is 10 tl a kilo and that will make 8 good portions.

Fortunately it would need a neck longer than it does. Or maybe it can and that is why it tastes so good lol

We used to have a tight-fisted landlady in the old days. She always served up ox tongue for lunch and oxtail for dinner - so she could make ends meet ! LOL

Seriously though..... oxtail stew is a really nourishing, tasty and cheap meal. Best results come from either slow cooking or pressure cooking, both methods sealing in flavours and tenderising. For 2 people, would recommend 6 individual joints of oxtail. Lightly brown in med.hot oil or fat. Drain & transfer to cooking pot. Make a flour-based gravy (for eventual thickness) and transfer this also to cooking pot. Add roughly chopped onions, carrots and celery (amount to suit) with liquid just covering all ingredients. Season well and (optional) add bouquet garni for added flavour. Slow cook (simmering) for at least 2 hours. Pressure cook 20-30 mins very gently and leave to cool naturally. Lightly boil some halved potatoes and add these to the meat stew and cook for a further 10 mins. till cooked through. Serve and enjoy!

the oxtail here for some reason takes closer to 4 hours before being tender, try adding 1/3 bottle of red wine for raising to anther level

oxtails are not really from ox, they are from the cattle bred for meat and so the rest of the carcass will be used for all sorts of things, some of which it is best not to know.

Yes, Boat Tours, message 21 is correct. In the western world (including most of the middle east) it is BEEF that is used. an 'ox' is the old-fashioned name for a bull or bullock (male cow!) so oxtail and ox tongues come from modern cattle. As I'm sure you'll know, most parts of a cow or bullock are used in various forms for cooking purposes and only a little is thrown away - or used for non-human consumption. Hope you'll now go straight to the top of your class as a very well-informed 8 year old !!
