It would be much safer to have the whole sentence really. In addition to the dictionary meaning stated above. it can also mean "blackish" or "resembling black" since the root word "kara" means "black".

My online translater ( http://www.turkishdictionary.net/) also lists kara as 'person who breaks up a friendship by carrying tales'

Ah well, I better get in before our Private Pike. Kara Sakal literally means "Black Beard". During the struggle days from 1963 to 1974 many Turkish Cypriots were living in enclaves where they felt in relative safety from the attacks of Greek Cypriots. A number of Commandoes from Turkey were sent to Cyprus clandestinely and they were in civilian dress and lived mostly in the mountains. Turkish Cypriots called them "Kara Sakal" because of their black beards. After 1974, it became customary to refer to Turks from Turkey as "Karasakal" or simply "Kara". It is mostly used in a deregotary manner.

Why is it everytime i post a message on here, i end up even more confused than i was to start with?

The way this was said to me, i think it was meant to mean 'deer' - i'm presuming as in 'dear'. He explained exactly as Elliecy wrote.

Elaine,

Read my post again. I was only giving you a possibility as you appear to be extremely naive for someone who claims to be a grown woman of 44.

Is it angst, or too much lager?

Thanks for calling me "naive". For your information, i am not naive. I just replied to state that i did not understand what you wrote. Call me stupid, call me whatever you want, i don't really care, but do you always have to be so negative towards me? i came here asking for advice, and you don't give advice. you give negativity all the time. if u can't give me sound advice and make it understandable, then please don't reply to my questions and let the others help me.

Once again this thread has descended into personal attacks on one another. Can the moderaters not ban the people who are doing this? There about 6 people who cannot post without getting abusive and they are spoiling this site for all members.

Re. msg. 17

Elaine,

Yes I have noticed it in its context. I think he is referring to "Karaca" as a bird and resembling you to a bird in a nice way. You know the rest of the sentence. Let curiosity kill the cat as well as a few others on this BB
