Sorry folks - going through one of my insomniac phases.

Just seen that petrol in the UK has now hit (and in some places exceeded) the £6.00 per gallon mark.

One can only hope that within the budget later this month the Chancellor will announce some form of "capping" on fuel prices (I, for one, won't be holding my breath). However, having said that, companies are going bust left, right and centre due to the cost of fuel. The troubles in the Middle East have, of course, exacerbated matters.

Who said on 44 that the UK was a very desirable place to live - it probably is, if you can afford it

i can remember as a kid - petrol stations had signs up saying "save time buy a pounds worth" - which as a recall got you a gallon and a half............

a pounds worth now is going to get you slightly more than an egg cup full........

Me thinks the speculators are cashing in on the present situation. In the next few months the oil companies will be announcing their increased profits. Basically its all pure greed.

I watching one of the news channnels a couple of days ago and an 'expert' being interviewed said that it was a real possibility that petrol may hit the £2.00 a litre mark by the end of the year!

Now, where's my bike .....

But will it stop all the lazy parents doing the school run? I live in a small village and can walk around it in 3/4 hr but the roads are clogged up between 2.30 and 3.30 pm. seen parents sitting in the cars from 2.45 till child comes out of school at 3.20 just to get outside the school gate.

Ten years ago the ratio of petrol to diesel in private motor vehilces was 80 petrol to 20 diesel.

in 2010 and 2011 the ratio has completely reversed as the price of diesel is 10% less than petrol and fuel consumption rates in diesel vehicles are far better.

In Ireland a litre of petrol is €1.50 with diesel costing about €1.38. The last Irish Govt realised the changes and imposed extra taxes on diesel. Despite this it is still far cheaper.

Quarmby is correct, fuel is now the product of choice for speculators who will drive the price upwards regardless of improved supply from Saudi Arabia and Nigeria.

Interestingly, diesel here in UK is more expensive than unleaded petrol by a few pence a litre.

Buy a scooter at 100 mpg it don't hurt your pocket to much and they are only £700 from me .

Nick message 2 I think you will find that petrol was a lot cheaper than that in the late 60's I am sure it was under 5 bob a gallon

I sure I can remember buying it at less than 30p a gallon in 1973 and also having petrol rationing coupons being posted to me when they though it was going to be rationed.

Unless you are doing long regular journeys it's not worth having a diesel car.

I hear that huge tanker ships containing oil are moored out at sea off the Devon coast just waiting for the price of oil to go up before they dock....

You're not wrong Liz.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed UK car sales fell by 7.7% in February compared with the same month in 2010.

However, traditionally February is a quiet month for the car industry, with many waiting for the new number plate in March.

The continuous fall in sales was expected due to the withdrawal of the scrappage scheme.

The SMMT said the number of new cars sold in the month was 63,424 – representing the eighth consecutive monthly fall in sales.

I remember years ago filling my fuel tank for £40 then complaining to the cashier that I paid less to buy my first car. At that time my Aunt asked me why I was foolish enough to pay £140,000 for a house when her first house cost her £450 so I pointed to the garden small wooden shed and said "That has just cost me £550" !!

Just been reported on the news.

Filling stations are going to show PORN MOVIES whilst your filling up your cars.

This is so you can watch someone else getting screwed at the same time you are.

Please remember that the vast majority of the price paid in the UK for fuel of any type is TAX imposed by the Government to balance the books of 'UK Plc'. People from all over the World queue up to get into the UK because the legendary Welfare State looks after them forever.....even many people in the UK find it marginal to work versus the benefits they can achieve by not doing so.

Simply put the UK Government hands out more money that it can now afford.

The pain for everyone in globalisation is that the wealth of richer nations i.e. US. UK & W Europe is being progressively dispursed into Asia in particular & there is nothing that can stop it. The UK will become a poorer nation over the next 10 years, particularly the working class

So, in order to lower the duty on fuel, the UK Government have to turn off the 'money tap' but unfortunately as we already in the financial doldrums, it will be a very hard time for everyone concerned. So if you are already here in the TRNC...stay
