Switzerland as part of long forgotten European empires and the Kantons (sort of provinces) of Switzerland have fought many wars! The Swiss were known as fierce and very loyal fighters - why do you think the Pope recruited (and still does) them for his personal guard in the Vatican?

Looked after the Jewish gold for the Nazis with no questions asked and not keen on foreigners. Very scenic, though.

RE msg 10, Shrimp: You just wait till Switzerland one day declares war on the UK and the Swiss Republican Navy sets sail to battle the British Royal Navy...

P.S. They only set sail when there is enough wind, of course...

P.P.S. And if one day they have a Navy, of course...

RE msg 14, No1Doyen: Haha, Bill! I'm afraid you have never been there! One of the highest percentrages heart diseases in the world and a huge alcohol problem. Ever seen Fins drink? I did several times when I had to work there. At one or two am, when the pubs close, the Fins order as many glasses as the table can hold and drink till the almost drop dead!

Canada.........ah yes........my daughter lives there and Vancouver Island has got to be the most wonderful place in the world to live.....generally though I think that Canada is for the young, it is majestic indeed and beautiful but full of keepfit fanatics, walkers, skiiers, hikers, skateboarders, joggers etc. you need to be young and fit to get the most out of this fantastic country....

I am sure it does have problems but the beautiful Azores by nature of it's isolated location is relatively free from polution and under the radar when it comes to political interference and avarice from other nations, so far anyway !

Of course there is no place on earth that is perfect. The human race is by nature, totally imperfect.

However, there is no place like home & I suggest our own country , the United Kingdom, is as good as it gets. As someone who has lived in many different parts of the World, I have come to truly appreciate that despite it's imperfections, & there are many of those, my country is pretty good. Without harking back to our rich history & culture, we British have got an awful lot to be proud of.

Having spent 6 months in the wonderful TRNC in rented accommodation, we leave soon with very fond memories & will return on holidays in the future. We are now going home to England & looking forward to it very much. The cynics here will come out with all the usual stuff about the weather, prices, crime et al.....the World is full of the things we don't like...but at the end of the day friends....there is no place like your own country. In my case the UK

I think the Finns have a very high suicide rate. Lack of light ?

I wonder what the numbers are in TRNC.

Message 26, I think Sweden as well, it could be the lack of light, but both also have a high number of alcoholics.

As for a good place to live I am really surprised no one has mentioned New Zealand.

Spotlessly clean, because they look after their country, mild climate, no dangerous animals, spiders etc, and really friendly natives that speak almost the same language as us Brits....

I could go on................
