I watched the news this morning, earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, fighting in Libya, revolts in many Arab states, what a strange world we live in. I then went outside and sat in the garden, the sun was shining, the birds were singing, everything slowly coming back to life after the winter, and I couldn't help but wonder why so many people call it * The Cyprus Problem*, compared to what is happening in the rest of the world if these are problems then I am very lucky indeed.

You know Hats I said the same thing only today to a customer. When we see what some have to face we are indeed so lucky.

We lived through 30 years of the "troubles",to come to TRNC whenever we wanted was like another world.

Message 1. That's a very egocentric view and not sure I agree and pretty sure most Cypriots wouldn't agree with your view. It's true the events in Japan and Libya have dominated the news over the past few weeks - but like all news it will become old and forgotten. The trials and tribulations of the Cypriot people have been going on for a generation - although much of it has been self imposed. What bird life that is still alive in Japan will be singing in the new dawn, and I'm sure there will be Japanese citizens saying 'I am very lucky indeed' - while mourning the loss of loved ones.

I don't believe mine is an egocentric view, it is my personal view taking into account the state of the world today. Of course there are people who are affected by the isolation of TRNC, all of my neighbours came to the north from Paphos and so lived very much through the troubles on this beautiful island and yet survived. They have no desire at all for a united Cyprus and I accept that they are in a better position to judge than me, they too still mourn the loss of loved ones during the troubles but shrug and say, What problem.

So very true hattikins, think something like this disaster does help to put things into perspective where ever you live.

We should all be thankful to wake up to a beautiful day as has been here in GB too.

Those poor souls in Japan must have thought the world had ended.

Thanks for your intelligent contribution Rowlo, but fail to see how commenting on a post is a hijack. Was it the word egocentric that threw you.

Didn't wish to suggest hattikins was wrong to feel lucky to be living in the TRNC, just felt her comments suggesting there are no problems in Cyprus spoiled what was until then a lovely image of life in Cyprus.

On a list of things for the UN to deal with, where does Cyprus come?

Some way behind most of the troubles in the world, I'd guess.

It's a paradox that as no-one is being killed or starving to death in Cyprus, it doesn't keep many people in the UN awake at night.

No it was not, I live in TRNC and so don't read the comics that you obviously do.If you just take a good hard look at the world you will see that Cyprus really is insignificant at present.

Hi Greenman, I think Hattikins original message referred to how she was feeling at the particular moment. It was an emotional and psychological 'in the moment' response to a good experience. It was not meant as a political statement - please correct me if I'm wrong Hattikins. There always has been and always will be disasters, disease and upheavals in our world and most of us are aware of the 'Problem' but don't continually focus on them and it. Hattikins and many of us are fortunate to be able to comment on the beauty of life during special moments and the spirit of Hattikins comment cheered me up here in cold England. Here endeth the lesson

Hi johnerebus, I have no axe to grind with hattikins, and if I have caused her any distress then I apologise. Message 12 was written to acknowledge hattikins obvious delight in living that particular moment, and hope she enjoys many more. I still question the suggestion that there is no Cyprus problem.

Don't worry hattikns I am not going to throw cold water on your thread. I too am blessed, I am alive, I am healthy, I fight the good fight and if I Had a choice of where to fight it, I would choose here, warts and all.

My heart goes out to all those poor folk in Japan and indeed in all the places where people have to scarpe by on next to nothing.

We are all blessed indeed.

I commented on how I saw the world and my place in it at that moment in time, it was not meant as a political statement nor was I saying I'm alright Jack.

In my opinion the problems that people refer to in Cyprus are as nothing compared to the death, danger and destruction being faced by many people around the world.

I consider myself to be very lucky indeed, others may think as they will.

hattikins - yes, agree with you.

I am also reminded this morning, on a beautiful day in our part of the country, how fickle Mother Nature can be. Here the sun is shining, daffodils are in bloom and there's new life everywhere in the garden. The other side of the coin is the devastation in Japan - goes to prove that it's pointless 'arguing' with nature.

Be thankful for what you have - you're a long time dead.

I did not make any comparison, I merely voiced an opinion based on my feelings. If you or others choose to twist that in to a political issue please feel free.

I will say again, compared to what is happening in the world today then the *Cyprus problem*is well down on the list of priorities, that of course is just my opinion.

Lilly, The trouble with words is that they have meaning. hattikins described a very pleasant moment of life in her garden and that feeling of new life emerging after the winter months. Perhaps she should have stopped at that and skipped the comments about Japan, Libya and the 'Cyprus problem'. The juxtaposition of the two made it difficult not to comment as it did suggest an 'I'm fine, so what's the problem' attitude, which perhaps was not intentional.

hattikins message 1:

we are often presented with this poser:

if "europe" wants turkey to leave and cyprus to reunite*

why isn't that going to happen?

...think bodybags, latter-day backwaters and geopolitics

I agree with your views on a world wallowing in problems,

however

andre

msg1, it would seem you are not allowed to enjoy your bit of pleasure and a little bit of reflection on the world with out others pulling it to pieces again, its 'damned if you do' .... 'damned if you don't'...

Enjoy.... I know I do when the spring comes ...... it means Iv managed to live to see perhaps another summer too..
