We are coming over next week and we need to set up a bank account, so that we can pay Direct Debits etc.

Which banks are the best in your opinion? We will be in Lapta. Or do we need to go to Girne?

Thanks in advance.

Steve,

I can from experience recommend you bank quite locally, long way onto town from Lapta. The Turk Bankasi in Alsancak, opposite the Golden Lady statue is good, and Gemma Carter, the English customer rep in there even posts on the BB's when the bank is closed for holidays, and she will happily give you her mobile number for contact. Only drawback I have found is you can't (or I haven't found a way yet) to change the cash point to English.

IsBank on the main road out of Ky is also very good though busier.

As for DD's, (I beleive you can only actully do standing orders in NC) be very careful. There was a person on one of the BB'a a while back inadvertently had about £2,000 taken for electric bill. They spoke to Kibtec who said they could not refund, just put them in credit.

You can pay your bills at the Turk Bankasi, mobile, water (Alsancak only I think) and electric.

Cheers

Brian

creditwest Karaoglanoglu, all staff speak excellent English. Direct debits for everything bar Lapta water, very good for insurance products. Lots of happy Brit customers. Worth checking out.

Although you have to Q for a long time sometimes the HSBC in Girne does allow you to have an internet access which could be useful if your not always in the TRNC, perhaps open one there and one in another where you can transfer into, as I do not think the HSBC will do a DD for water bills but I may be wrong.

You can arrange to have all your bills paid from your account at Creditwest Bank automatically just call into one of our ex pat branches at Karaoğlanoğlu or Çatalköy and they will give you information on how this is done. Our Savings interest rates are very competitive, dont forget to enquire about those as well.

Hi CreditwestRep

When I look on the Creditwest web site and go into the savings interest page, it does not show any rates? Why is this please as I am sure they have been shown in past weeks. Thanks.

Yes snakes we have 3 branches in Girne one in the center, one at Karaoğlanoğlu (Expats) and one in Çatalköy (Expats), for an interest rate if you can email me with your amount then I can get the best rate for you, dont want to go public on amounts and rates, we feel this information is confidential to each customer.

Steve,

Depending on how much money you are going to deposit you should consider factors such as described above re location and service and also... safety.

In these uncertain times TRNC banks may not be the safest of baskets within which to put all your eggs.

They do offer the highest interest rates on YTL accounts but that may be an indicator of their exposure to risk...

We do use the Iktisat Bank for many banking products and insurance and they have never let us down but we still would not put all our money in there.

high interest is no good when you consider the fluctuations of the ytl and also the risk of banking in the trnc.
