South Cyprus is being hauled over the coals for a failure to inform the European Commission about measures to adopt EU legislation on protection of the marine environment.

Following 2008 EU legislation, Directive 2008/56/EC (the “Marine Strategy Framework Directive”) South Cyprus should have put measures in place by 15 July 2010.

In cases where member states fail to transpose EU legislation into national law within the required deadline, the Commission can now ask for financial sanctions to be imposed at the first referral to Court. (This policy was adopted in November 2010 and entered into force on 15 January 2011).

Too busy with their oil and gas projects, perhaps ....

May be they are too busy with the 'CY problem' .. I wonder what the 'rump' RoC govt would do if it hadn't got this problem .... it wouldn't have any 'excuses' !!

mmmmmmmm,

According to the EU themselves , the Aquis in "North Cyprus" is suspended until further notice, under Protocol 10.

Therefore, Directive 2008/56/EC, can only apply to that part of Cyprus not in the North, i.e. South Cyprus.

Wasn't the whole point of Protocol 10 to insure that the RoC wasn't held responsible for the TRNC not obeying directives? If this is the case, Directive 2008/56/EC can only apply to RoC which is in "South" Cyprus.

mark message 5:

your comment is as expected and even backed up with a portentious-sounding publication link

in reality, as we know, france and germany will do their darndest to keep turkey out of the eu

this will of course preclude the north from getting any benefits of membership,

apart from the odd handout, since having made such sacrifices turkey will only leave cyprus

in the most unlikely of scenarios such as compromise from the gc's on property and security

...and unless you spent all of the last 37 years in c.i.a.-style sensory deprivation chamber,

you must be as well aware of these realities as even the most unschooled of us

perhaps this defines your tactics, approach, belief system, point of view call it what you will:

"you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink"
