I realise this is a bit of footie banter and political correctness never was a strong point of many stanley-knife-weilding yobbos but is not the thread title a bit dodgy?

I agree Grouch. The term - Yid - is used as a derogatory epithet by antisemites. Not a very nice name.

Dodgy and insulting title, I have enough problems being a Spurs fan without having to drop em every time someone questions my ethnicity. After all, how would the good folk of `ull feel if people kept asking them if they had "two jags?"

I thought your choice of headline for your post is way out of order !!

I am sure you couldn't wait to get your typing finger going after a great win but, you obviously don't know the history !!

As a lifelong Arsenal supporter i have been to many derbies especially through the 70's and eighties when the violence was at it's worst. Apart from one incident a few years ago when the Tottenham fans decided to rip up the seats at Highbury, the violence has subsided.

However the Arsenal Tottenham games are not like any other derby, The mancs derby is hot, the mersey derby is red hot but the North London derby is white hot !!It is not a nice place to be if you are faint hearted some of the chanting is EVIL !!

The "Y" word at the Emirates is hardly heard any more and if you go onto any Arsenal forum the "Y" word is banned. Mainly because we have just as many Jewish supporters as they do, so we would be insulting our own.

Obviously if you are a northerner you don't know the history but i think an apology is in order from you to any Jewish people on the board, and there are plenty. Israel is only across the water.

if memory serves correct, Tottenham played in Israel last season and thir supporters (including the jewish ones) carried a banner declaring the Yid Army. & there was`nt any complaints from the host side. So why is somene trying to bring political correctness into sport. Have you ever heard of the Yanks

Yiddish, is a term for a dialect of the jewish language, nothing wrong in that but the term "yid" is akin to other distasteful terms (which I won't repeat) used to stigmatise a people on the basis of ethnic origin...

It's OK to call yourself something, but in the usage here that is not the case... and so it is offensive to speak in such terms... a simple thing.

hi guys

the word yid even thou is quite controversial is used by the jewish community to describe another jew who is very religious

and the term was adopted by us spurs fans aswell as yidoo and yid army as a way to reverse the negative chants that other clubs supporters used to call us due to the club being owned by jews and also having a large jewish fanbase

ajax in holland had the same problem when psv used to play them in their derby and they used to call them Joden which is jew in dutch

arry not sure bout you mate but when i have gone to the derby during the 80's and 90's between u lot and us has always been quite volatile and abusive at highbury and white hart lane not sure bout emirates never been and every gonner i know always calls us yids

i agree yidoo can be percived as abusive to jews and to non jews alike especially me being a muslim but im sure newlad did not mean any offence just using the banter the football fans use

Might not mean any harm in the post but in everyday usage generally in the UK it is used in an offensive way.

I am sure that Newlad didn't mean it as an insult and as i said in my post unless you are a Londoner you wouldn't think twice about using it . But it isn't the same as calling a Liverpudian a scouser or an American a yank, because they are just slang words and mean nothing.

There is great banter at football matches and there is nothing like a live game. There must be loads of things at matches that are off the cuff and you couldn't write a script as good as it

So how about continuing this thread on the Funniest things you have seen or heard at a live sporting event.

Hi All,

In 1991 i managed to blag two tickets for the f.a.cup final between spurs and forest. This was the one where gazza lost the plot and commited a crazy foul against gary charles.Anyway i digress. Before the game i spent a few hours with a gang of tottenham fans, some of which carried flags with the star of david printed on.We had a great time and the beer flowed etc etc.

As we were walking down wembley way the chant went up of "we are the yids, we are the yids, we are we are we are the yids".At the time i didnt what this meant so just sang along.I never thought anymore of the chant, went into the ground, watched the game, which if memory serves me well tottenham won after extra time. After the game met up with the same lads and drank into the night. When i got home i asked people what yid meant and was told that it was another name for a jew.

I have obviously offended some people on here with the headline i used and i am truly sorry. Please believe me when i say that no harm was ever meant by this and i was only using this word as i understood it to be used by spurs fans.I feel truly embarassed by the headline now and glad that it has been changed. Also thanks for those who realised that nothing offensive was ever meant by me,

Regards,

A very red faced,

Paul.

The word Yid refers to people who speak Yiddish. Yiddish is a nonterritorial High German language, spoken throughout the world but, unlike other such languages, is written with the Hebrew alphabet. (Wiki).

As to Yank or Yankee, one school of thought is that the word is a borrowing from the Wendat [called Huron by the French] pronunciation of the French word for "English," Anglais, or specifically "L'anglais," sounded as "Y'an-gee."(Wiki).

Interestingly, it would seem the original Yanks were Brits.

Anyway, the way I read it, the term Yid is no worse than Yank as it is a reference to the language spoken by a certain group of people.

hi matey

i think it will either be 1-1 or spurs just nick it, can even contemplate them losing!!!!

not sure if it will be this game but some team will get the back lash from spurs if they come out of this slump!!!

ramos (like raneri old chelski manager) has to stop tinkering with the team thats what pre season is for, getting rid of keane has lost the balance between midfield and attack cos keano was one of the players who used to link up the midfield so cleverly, the defence is good when hutton comes back from injury and woodgate and king in the middle and bale on the other side, all we need is a midfiled anchor man and another striker and we will be ok!!!

but im glad hull smashed the gonners at the emirates!!!! lol

regards

Erkan,

Cant see lightning striking twice mate.Last week was a bit of a fairy tale really and it still hasnt sunk in.Hull is buzzing like a fridge at the moment and long may it continue.Going back to the emirates game,i thought Arsenal tried to play to much football. Why make twelve passes when you can complete a move in five. But i suppose when it comes off you are the bees knees.

City seemed to have more passion and commitment and i couldnt fault them.I feel sorry for your lot though.Perhaps winning the league cup could have been the worst thing to happen to you. After that your season seemed to end.To lose Robbie Keane is like taking a leg of he was the life blood of the team and will be sorely missed.

Sorry for banging on mate.3-1 to spurs on Sunday but i hope i am wrong wonder if i will see any of my mates from 1991 lol,

Best Regards,

Paul.

Q. Who is currently the the strongest team in the English Premiership?
