I've said it before and I'll say it again. With 40,000 fit and healthy young men doing not a lot apart from wondering why the hell they're here, how much blood has the Turkish army donated?

Zoots; if you can't contribute butt out!

My Mrs will be at Near East at 8am in the morning.

Do not go to the central blood bank.

Try contacting 'nurse awful', Chris or 'DC', Hans. They used to have a list but passed it on to another organisation. They'll point you in the right direction.

newsscoop: " if you can't contribute butt out!"

If you haven't appealed to the civil affairs department of the Turkish army asking for blood then you're ignoring a very sensible suggestion.

But I'm sure you know best.

Zoots;

You didn't actually suggest going to the army, but what you could do is give a pint of your own tomorrow.

Perhaps you should read Zoots mess 2 again?

Newscoop,

I am A+ and willing to give blood if necessary. Two hurdles:

1. I gave blood at Girne on Feb 19th so I'm not sure they would allow me to give another pint so soon.

2. I don't have transport to get to the hospital

If they are not a problem my blood is available

TRNCvictim;

Perhaps you should read mess 2 again and pray tell where Zoots suggests going to the army.

As opposed to informing us that 40,000 of them are here and asking how much blood they've donated.

Msg 10

I'm not sure about the compatibility of your blood group to 'O' positive. Chris, 'nurseawful' will know. The list of C44 members list of willing donors has been passed on to the BRS but, to my understanding, they will only help if you're a member of their organisation.

Richard,

The hospital will exchange the blood for the correct one, basically they need ten pints of blood then they exchange with the central blood bank, I gave blood before when called for and they needed negative but took my pos. and told me thats what they do.

Msg 13 - I consider it unconscionable an organisation will only help, if one is a member - I am in England, and my health (heaps of morphine, oromorph and co-codamol - let alone buckets of other stuff for now) would preclude my contribution in any event - but if a human being can help another - nothing should prevent that, organisation or not........

O Positive - surely the most common of all blood types?

I do appreciate that there was a bit of a "contretemps" a while ago with regard to who would keep a register of blood donations (bloody stupid, but that's the BRS for you, in my very limited experience) but I cannot believe that a hospital (any hospital) would not have pints of the most common blood type in the world?

Words fail me (believe it, or not).

Good luck.

As of 08:45 one donor had given blood.

Only 15 left to go. (apparently they now want 16 and not 10)

Is blood still needed now ?

There are two of us willing but maybe unable to donate today, are we exempt because of Malaria tabs & recent travels to South America as we would be banned in the UK ????

Still waiting for a email, still willing to help, still without transport.

Woodspeckie,

you obviously don't attend blood donor sessions when Brits and Locals give up their time to stand in line to donate blood to the national blood bank for no more reward than a cup of tea and biscuit! You antagonistic person!!!!

A good memorial to Roy would be instead of people bickering and points scoring some of them actually got off their backsides and did something. Giving blood for example.

Think about it.

So sorry that Roy didn't survive the operation.

In answer to some of the questions O negative is the only universal donor - which means that they can safely donate to any other blood type, this is the only blood group that can do this.

The BRS HELPS the blood bank to organise the blood donor days, the BRS do not specify only their members can receive blood, the blood bank request blood, the BRS try to find it...for anyone regardless of colour, creed, race or religion. I can only think that people suggesting otherwise are betraying a reflection of their own behaviour.

On average it takes 10 phone calls to donors on the database to secure one unit, I know this because I am the person that makes the calls. I wish I had the luxury of 250 O + donors (25 units were requested for Roy) on the database to call, sadly there are less than 114 eligible donors at the present time (I only managed to get 6 donors) Instead of bickering (thx newscoop msg 44) get off your arse and donate...I DO!!

You are so right (msg 44).

Too many people with time on their hands and trying to score points....as well as blowing their own trumpets.

Having turned 50 in January I decided to conquer one of my fears...needle phobia.

Went and donated blood at Girne hospital for the first time and have to say it wasn't easy, but I did it!

Will I do it again...YES.

Sincere condolences to family and friends of Roy.

That is such a shame that he didn't make it. Condolences and thoughts to his family. I just hope that the pint I rushed down and gave that morning will go to help someone else that needs it. At least the EMU Hospital looks as if it can store the stuff properly.

Puppylover,

I'm sorry if you feel I was trying to blow my own trumpet, my intention was soley to illustrate just how few donors there are on the database and to try and encourage more people like you to donate blood. It seems I didn't achieve that very well.

Sincere apologies if you felt I included you in my msg...I was actually agreeing with newscoop's comments.

Like you, I posted my experience in the hope that other members would consider donating blood.

My comment re:blowing their own trumpets was certainly not aimed at yourself.

I have the utmost respect for what you do and try to achieve.

You do it silently and that was what my comment "blowing their own trumpets" was aimed at...those that

work silently without any/little recognition and those that need to tell the world.

Again I apologise if you felt I have insulted you....it was not my intention.

Kind regards

Judy

Claire Msg 52 - I suspect that puppylover in Msg 50 was not having a go at you but at some of the other rather sad postings. If we can't help each other somehow then this is a sadder world for it.

Well done to those who did and sympathy to those who have lost a loved one.

Hi Judy,

Since your message came straight after mine, I thought it was that you were referring to, a problem with forums like this. Apologies accepted and I thank you for doing so.

It is a very sad situation that Roy did not make it through the operation and my thoughts go to his family.

Once again it has highlighted the shortages in the number of units of blood available and the number of donors that can be called upon when situations like this arise and I hope comments like yours about overcoming your fear of giving blood encourages others to do so.

Just one point I would like to make, to those who continue to have a problem with the BRS blood donor days with regard to who the blood is for - the blood bank is open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 2pm, you can always go along there and donate, safe in the knowledge that no one has a say in who it goes to!!!

Puppylover, sorry have just read that back and it didn't come out quite how I meant it.. thank you for your apology and for clearing up my mis-understanding, your apology wasn't really necessary as it was me that was at fault. Hopefully that makes snese and that situation is all sorted now!

Thank you for your reply Claire...much appreciated.

I'm glad that we haven't fallen out as life is too short.

Carry on the good work you do......I am sure I speak for others when I say it is much appreciated.

Hopefully more people will read sad situations like Roy's and consider how much that pint of blood is desperately needed and could save a life.

Kind regards

Could someone please tell me when the next "organised" blood donor day is as I missed the last one as I was anaemic - hence not giving in this situation. I went to one in Iskele last time, is there another planned there sometime soon please? Would it be possible to publish a list of organised donor days on this site which could be update as and when?
