I got a 30% deduction when I paid mine. Just ask for a discount!

The interest rate charged by the municipalities is the same as the government. I think at the moment its 3% for the first month and 2% for the rest. However you have to pay the interest at the rate it was at the relevant times and also take into account the prevaling official discounts. even the lawyers find it hard to keep up with the changes. The tax office is the place to ask for the right figures.

The Land Registry always asks for a statement from the municipality to make sure that all taxes on the property are paid before transfer. So how come the previous owner got away with it or is he still the owner until someone pays for it? Otherwise no transfer of title.

Thanks for your information, the reason why the previous owner got away not paying tax is that the tapu office doesnt check if tax hasn't paid as a foreigner I can only register the property in my name at the tapu office. I should have checked if he has paid the land tax, as this guy had even a hypothek on it I was more concerned to get that removed before registering. Also the seller was a Cypriot friend of mine the saying trust is good but control is better would have been better in that case.
