Jet Harris was a member of the best instrumental band ever to set foot on stage. They are my favourite band and I have hundreds of their recordings. Yes your right Groucho, he was one of the first musicians to play a bass guitar in the UK. My favourite number that he plays on is, 'FBI' and I'll play it on my show in a couple of weeks time. MIKE

He left the Shadows to form a duo with Tony Meehan. Just about the time he swapped the double bass for the electric job. Remember reading his life story some years ago.

Hi Denizen - Harris left the Shadows in 1962 with Tony Meehan. He actually built his own double bass before buying a professionally made one in 1956 to play in a school skiffle group. In late 1957 he joined the, 'Tony Crombie and his Rockets' band who played a mixture of skiffle, swing and early rock 'n' roll. It was Tony Crombie who presented him with his first base guitar (a German 'Framus' guitar) - he then went on to play with the 'Vipers Skiffle Group' and the 'Most Brothers Band' before liking up with Cliff Richard, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch. In 1959 his guitar was broken in an accidint and he was then presented with a 'Fender Precision Bass Guitar'. It was at Harris's suggestion that the group chose the name 'Shadows' after they had to change it from the 'Drifters'. MKE
