US media say the US has fired Cruise missiles on Libya from a warship. Western planes bombed targets in the capital, Tripoli, said the AFP news agency, quoting witnesses and state TV. A British submarine has fired a number of missiles at Libyan air defence targets, the Ministry of Defence said.

The US also reveals 25 coalition ships, including three US submarines armed with Tomahawk missiles, are stationed in the Mediterranean. A US military chief says a total of 110 Tomahawk missiles have been launched against Libyan sites. He said the Coalition operation has been named Odyssey Dawn

I don't think Obama is 'spineless' at all, but very wise. He does not want to be seen as U.S might leading this, but as part of a coalition, which includes Arab states (don't see evidence of which or what they are actually doing yet)

Why has the western world suddenly become concerned about the legitimate recognized government of a country using military might to quash a civil war? Does this not happen all the time around the world? History is full of civil war. So why do France and UK and others care about what happens in Libya. OIL OIL OIL OIL. Not the Libyans but the control of their oil is their primary concern. If you believe that western governments are protecting the Libyans' fight for democracy then you live in cloud cookoo land

Yes it is largely to do with oil, but we should be concerned about oil. Oil is as important as water to us in the West. I wish it wasn't. The reason for the intervention is mostly psychological, as are most things. France made a hash over it's former colony Tunisia and now it wants to make amends in Libya. It wants to wash away that embarrassment. Most democracies are not really concerned about the rebels, psychologically it is impossible for us to feel deep empathy for those we do not know, however we can experience our own guilt for not acting. Interestingly, most foreign nationals who fought against us in Iraq came from Libya, no doubt many of these are the rebels we are now supporting. We sided with Gadafi because he was fighting al qaeda, just as we support the repressive Saudi regime. The trouble is that Gadafi has gone in to meltdown so needs to be taken out. Not sure how though, as the UN resolution does not specify this. It is going to get messy.

The majority of English do not support Cameron and his Tory Government. What on earth would we say if China and Russia said "get out David" ... you are killing off your own people by these drastic measures, dismantling the NHS, not caring what happens to the elderly who need long term health care, sacking up to 40% of the Police Force, major redundancies within the Civil Service and local government, and now reducing the Armed Forces! No one gave you a mandate to do this. So why isn't David concentrating on our hungry, sick, aged, unemployed and many other needy people instead of wasting the nation's assets on another ill thought through "Regime Change" action?! Why not help the peoples in earthquake and volcano stricken areas instead of waging wars? Misinformation and disinformation prevail throughout the US and UK Government departments! What is now happening has nothing to do with controlling a "No Fly Zone" ...
