Advise her to think two things - 18 years is proof positive her cat was well fed, nurtured, happy and content, to have lived for so long - and when she thinks of her cat, she should dwell on the good times, the funny characteristics that made the cat an individual, not on her loss, but on the good memories left behind, to bring to mind, when she feels down.........

Thank you all. My daughter cannot have children and she struggles with MS and her cat has been a child best friend etc most of her adult life. But these last few days she was unwell and the vet said its time. So it was peaceful for her.

I know how she feels and my thoughts are with her. I've had this happen twice, each time it broke my heart, but I have a new one now and expect that one day it may happen again, but the good times make it worth it. Although, thinking about it, this new one could well outlive me.

Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. When I was young I lost my old dog and told everyone that I would NEVER have another, that I could not stand to be heartbroken like that again. A wise old man told me to remember the sentence above.
