Know what you mean! I thought line dancing originated in America. Now if they were Morris dancers? Maybe.

Morris dancing requires dressing up in silly clothes and waving you arms and legs about,a bit like ,Oh yes,Line Dancing,..........Morris dancing is usually performed by shall we say, people of a strange persuasion...

So, no culture in the Bronze or Iron Age in England? What a shame that current civilization and culture never matured from those era's! I'll stick to Stonehenge with the pagans and druids for philosophical and cultural needs!

OK I made it British not English, because I don't think there is anything that England has that Wales and Scotland don't have in some measure....

MartinD41. Going around in circles. I added to the list of English culture a tradition for being besotted by the crap weather and all it's paraphernalia not the origin of the items mentioned. For some reason Groucho saw fit to remind me that MacIntosh invented rubber raincoats so I thought I should remind him that I also knew that a scot Dunlop invented rubber tyres. As you mention Calvados, I believe it is a French drink but that does not invalidate your comment on how Fishermen add to the culture by getting p......d !

Yeah Dawg, but he invented it because Scottish weather is worse than English weather and then some!

You can hardly claim English weather is cultural... can you? Seems to me it's geographical.

The British are so inter-mixed culturally I don't think many things are pure English anymore, other than maybe Morris Dancing, already mentioned, which seems suitably eccentric enough to be classified as 'English' through and through. As in - no other nation would want to claim it...

Of course weather is geographical and universal. The weather is more severe in Wales and Ireland as well as Scotland. It is how it is dealt with which is the cultural element. The English, in the main, treat the weather as the be all and end all of their lives. They dash around in the rain dressed for a gale thrusting umbrellas forward and trying to take eyes out on every street corner and pedestrian subway. When they make an indoor haven they leave their umbrellas open to dry underfoot on the floor and talk about the weather usually boasting that they have studied the long range weather forecasts and there is worse to come. Not even an English style, genteel cup of tea, let alone a wee dram, will stop them. Any mild inclement weather never fails to cause chaos to transport systems. Every Bank holiday is preceded by days of discussing the likely weather and is followed by protracted discussions of how the holiday was ruined by bad weather. Go fishing and who cares ! (
