What has been your biggest achievement and why?

For me there are a few, but one in particular is as a volunteer for a charity called Homestart. I was assigned an 18 year old with a 16 month old baby and a staffi puppy.

She had a boyfriend who beat her, a baby who had terribly bowed legs, a puppy she couldn't afford to feed or look after. She was in debt and had no family support.

2 days a week I would go and give her company, take the baby out so she could have a bath, walk the dog etc.

Gradually she confided in me. She finished with the monster beating her. We got help with her finances so she was in a better position. We sold the puppy back to it's original owners, and sort medical help for her little girl.

All in all it was just over a year. I watched a fragile young girl blossom into a confident young lady.

When I had to say goodbye it was very emotional

A few months later at work in Debenhams there she was, she had just got her first job in the same dept, proud as punch!

Message 1, i can really relate to you as I too worked for homestart and although my family didnt have anything like the problems yours had, my mum was so fearful of herself and her baby, such low self esteem and I watched her grow into a competant mum and even got herself a classroom assistant job at her child's school, we still keep in touch and she is now a very glamerous mum not the dowdy young thing she was when I first met her.....

Also passing my driving test was one of the best feelings in the world - freedom!!

2 things, one like simba was having my little girl and the other is working for the Children in Need Foundation here and seeing how we change so many lives. To see the children's faces that we help is priceless and will stay with me forever.

Hi parks82uk...What a very nice thread and it dose make us think and on thinking I have found quite a few.Gaining my diploma was one and I too worked for homestart like yourself as a volunteer and also relate. I worked for the Mental Health team in Essex who seconded my training. It is always so very nice to see people gain confidence and move forward in life..I have been very fortunate to have worked in employment that I enjoyed so very much.

I think watching my own children grown into confident women after raising them on my own for 18yrs is something today that I am very proud of too.

I just remembered also when working in the mental health team at one time before the cutbacks I used to run a young persons group in the evening too. This was to enable them to gain more confidence and it was a very successful group too.

Lots of achievements but in terms of this forum

1) Having the balls to buy property in NC is spite on the question marks re deeds because you loe it here

2) Buying as an long term investment, at least 10/15 year & not worried by 3/5 year blips

3) Spending time in NC because its great - basically its got sea, sun, mountains. great people & a laid back style - so if you cannot find your fun here, you are in the wrong place.....

.....planning my next trip as I write

Sorry if I sound patronising, but my simple point is as long as you do things in life for the right reasons & see then through in the long term then not much can stand in your way......

Mine is of course becoming a mum and a grandmamma. Also worked for a ntaional charity that fulfilled the dreams of treminally ill children. The satisfaction I got from that enhanced my live by giving them a bit more time to see their dreams come true. Also becoming an airline stewardess after the 7th attempt of trying and working my way up to becom a cabin staff insctrutor x

Lillii,

As said before you are the 'sweetheart' of 44 & your 'human' achievements trump everything else.

All i was trying to do was get across the optimism I have long term for where we live (& work)

I am passionately against the doom & gloom merchants who like to try to drive NC down.... as I love it

Most of us clearly enjoy making others happy and helping to make their lives a little bit easier.

I am very fortunate to have a lovely healthy happy family, and I know how lucky I am!

On a different level as a Customer Service Manager it was an achievement every day to turn an angry or upset customer into a happy apologetic one. I get great satisfaction from turning the situation around.

Setting up a home infusion service for AIDS patients. Not only did I save the NHS £half a million in the 1st 6 months but I also had the opportunity to make the final months of life easier for some truly inspiring people. Getting so involved with their care showed me that the odd ache or pain I had was really nothing to complain about - a very humbling experience but one I wouldn't change for anything as I made some lovely friends who are sadly no longer with us.

Well done Hoylemiller lol

Well done to you Flossie!

Booitsme what a lovely achievement.

I believe that everything happens for a reason, and something good always comes from something bad, you just have to find what bit is, which can sometimes take a long while.

Have a lovely weekend 'forum friends' x
