On Monday Cyprus said that it was worried about Turkey’s plans to build a nuclear power station just less than 40 miles from the northern shores of Cyprus.

Earthquake prone Turkey is going ahead with plans to build a four reactor power station close to the Mediterranean city of Mersin just 15 miles from an active fault line.

In the light of recent developments in Japan Cypriot energy minister Antonis Paschalides said "I've expressed our grave concern over the nuclear programme of Turkey, and in particular the plans of Ankara to construct a nuclear power station in a seismically active area”.

Officials from Turkey have said they will be using third generation technology which is safer than the older technology used at the Fukushima nuclear plant which engineers have been struggling with since the earthquake and tsunami hit the country earlier this month.

Yes a TC that lives in our village is worried that he's going to lose his job with Kibtec because Electricity is going to be coming from Turkey in the future apparently, along with the water.

This should cause no problems as the Mainlanders in the construction industry can return home and put their skills to good use.

Have no fears, the reactors will be encased in at least 4 inches of concrete, with a reinforcing bar (or two) thrown in for good measure.

poor old japan...

a couple of years ago two nuclear workers were mixing isotopes

in a stainless steel bucket and it went "poof" in their face

I cannot believe how brave those fukushima workers are,

trying to read the user manual by torchlight inside the plant

likewise japan's banking sector is said to be rigid and outdated

...nobody is perfect, not even the land of the bullet train

as regards turkey and the mersin plant,

it should be ok but don't forget britain's windscale disaster

and the us partial meltdown at three-mile island

mersin will antagonise the greek cypriots, but no harm in that

and when it finally goes "pop" you can blame the russians,

since it is all their handiwork

I won't swim but instead lie on the floor drunk with the tv on

(so no change there then)
