Does anyone know if you can buy power converters on the island. As we are moving from Canada to Cyprus. Most of our goods run on 110 volts.

Cyprus, like the U.K. runs on 240 volts 50 hertz mains supply, North America runs 120 volts 60 hertz. you may purchase a yellow 110 volt transformer for some small items, but some equipment with electronics and motors may not work correctly because the frequency is different (50/60Hertz). All electrical equipment should have a manufacturers tag or name plate on it stating the serial number, voltage, frequency, wattage or va and current consumption. Check this 'name plate' and see if your equipment is suitable to run on 50 hertz. Maybe ELKO might like to add some comments? Alan.

My brand of voltage regulators up to 3 KVA have 220 and 110 volts output. However at 110 volts they are rated at half the rating i.e. a 3 KVA regulator is rated as 1.5 KVA at 110 volts. Please send me an e.mail if you need greater details. ismet

Alan, You beat me to it. I wrote the post above unaware of your post. Electronic equipment is not affected by the frequency because they really run on DC. The normal supply is converted into DC, hence no problem. The trouble comes with motors on their own and I don't expect anyone to bring in such an equipment i.e. a car wash motor or whatever. Small motora found in most equipment lke tape recorders or disc recorders run on DC anyway. ismet
