Msg 5, Really need to call Harvey about this,from My understanding registering a van here without a registered business can be tricky, if you have owned the car for less than 3 years in the UK it cannot be resold here for 5 years!!!, if owned for over 3 years you still cant resell for 2 years.

NN, is life really that boring in Pattaya?

Msg 5....."IF I TAKE A CAR OR VAN OVER CAN I SELL IT ON AFTER 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR"

I'm not really sure what you mean here but if you are importing one then the V5c must be in your name if its a van. Although the initial "duty" is less on commercials you will pay a fortune on road tax and may be asked to proove you have a business. NOT RECOMMENDED!

For a car as Racoonchic mentions, you won't be able to sell the car for 3/5 years if you import as a "personal import" and paying the tax later than the time of arrival at the port.

You may well be better off buying a car that's already here.

Good luck

msg 5;

First of all,you need to pay the duties on the vehicle as you'd be the only one to do that since the vehicle'd be registered in your name.Then,you'd be restricted from selling it (stamped on your log book)2-5 years.However,I've known people for giving power of attorney at the time of selling,so the new buyer could register the vehicle once the restriction is up.How long one'd be prepaired to wait to get their log book,is another question.

More hussle then it's worth if you ask me,but each to their own.

ps.You also need a valid temporary residency before you could import.

Hi, I am importing my car in the next few weeks as the UK tax runs out at the end of the month. My car is coming up for 6 years old so do I need to get an MOT and emissions test beforehand?

Thanks

Harvey sorts out the legal side , transferring ownership etc, ONCE you have purchased the car.

judyr.......... You can import your car if you have owned it for more than 5 years ( I guess you know that bit). You will need to meet other criteria such as coming here to settle, not importing any other vehicle etc. If you want to use the car here without paying the duty/ registration (for upto 1 year) then you MUST have the car taxed in the UK (I know it sounds crazy).

Once you register the car you won't be able to sell it or even let anyone (other than your spouse) drive the car for 3 years.

Let me know when you arrive and I can guide you in the right direction.

Harvey

Hi thanks for the info but I probably didn't explain myself properly. I already live here and the UK tax runs out at the end of this month so I need to go to customs etc..... but do I need it MOT's etc first? Also your comment about noone else being able to drive it - presumably my partner can as we are not married?
