I hate to have to say this, but check your gardens............

Some rotten bu''''''er has gone into my friends garden and stolen her terracotta pots. They aren't just

small plant pots, they're BIG ones. They were on her pool terrace, filled with soil. These 'scroats' have

emptied the soil, and left it in piles. There must have been at lease two of them, and they must've had

some kind of van, as they were really heavy.

:( :( :(

Probably an illegal worker who has run out of cash - Now, now, have mercy for the poor lad, maybe he was starving! Don't be ungrateful and remember they saved our asses from the Greeks!

I assume Flower Fairy means that 'she ain't got a pot to plant in'! what a rotten trick but much as one would like to think that the needs of the thieves was greater than the owner of the pots, I can't agree to have mercy for the poor lad, as I doubt he was even born in 1974! Of course, it could have been a jealous neighbour.

In all seriousness it all sucks - trespass, theft and leaving a mess. So sorry to hear about your friends though because this place was renowned for leaving doors open etc and no need to worry about thieves.

I know it`s a sad state of affairs, but if you work hard, and most of us do to get what you want, there is always some toe rag that wants to take their share.

Even if they are jealous, they are still sad souls. But that doesn't replace the pots. But what a thing to do. They mujst be strong. Some of those pots are humungous and not exaclty picked up like a cast aside c igarette packet. so, i guess one must be looking for a , green fingered, muscular, agile person capable of being invisible as well as silent. I mean what did they do with the things - put on a truck, roller skates - what?

wonder if you stand a chance of getting them back - maybe we should all mark our pots with luminous paint on the bottom, or some of that stuff they used to put on roofs in U.K to cover the burglars with green paingt.

Sad thing is, the market for a fully planted, large plant pot is limited. I hope whoever buys it is NOT

an ex pat.? One thing is for sure if someone buys it knowing or suspecting it is stolen - well you know

karma and all that. I am a great believer.

Yorg. Most petty thefts are opportunist anywhere in the world. If he is a thief, what you pay is irrelevent

he is going to rob you.

misunderstood;

What most expats don't seem to understand, Cyprus is not "anywhere in the world". WE NEVER HAD ANY KİND OF THEFTS PETTY OR OTHERWISE, even when unemployment was something like 30% during the war years between 1963 and 1974, and many years after. It all changed with the arrival and flooding of the place by illegal guests from motherland. Most TCs remember when we slept at nights with our front door and windows wide open - with no fear of anyone walking in uninvited!

Good morning Yorg.,

We don't use ''cheap'' labour. Ask the TC painter who we organised to come to give us a quote. I can't even type what he said when I told him about the missing pots.

Marion...'' They must be strong. i guess one must be looking for a , green fingered, muscular, agile person capable of being invisible as well as silent. I mean what did they do with the things - put on a truck, roller skates - what? ''

I have NEVER seen a man that fits this description. If you find one, please pass my telephone number on,

On a more serious note, beware. I have warned all the neighbours.

Whoever did this has spherical object bigger than a donkey. How they weren't seen beats me.

Big oz, It is a sign of the times, who would have thought they would steal, but then who would have thought

fraud would have happened here too. Wow I forgot, stealing a pot is a crime, stealing a house is fraud and not a criminal offence, it is a civil offence - duh.

I lived in the south when it was virtually crime free, then this sort of thing started to happen, especially when the iron curtain came down. I came here because it reminded me of the south when I lived there initially, now this is happening - they call it progress - guess I am old.

It was pretty much the same in most countries during this period, its changing times, and i beg to differ re illigal guests from the mother land.

Judge and Jury needed, its all very well blaming on the so called guests, are cypriots/brits all so honest they do not steal!!!!!!

2 nights ago friends in Karsiyaka heard a noise in the night. As they went to investigate they heard footsteps running away but saw no-one. The next morning they saw that the handles on all their sliding doors had been moved because someone had tested them.

Don't suppose your neighbours had any photos of these pots? Might be worth posting them and then if anyone does see them for sale ....................

When Linda and David Orams had to vacate their villa in Lapta it wasn't long before some miserable person stole all their pots. A large garden shed soon walked as well. If it wasn't bolted down it went, even the garden plants where stolen. As if they hadn't suffered enough.

When I retirned to my villa in Ozankoy in March, I promised my grandchildren that I would bring them some oranges and lemons. Unfortunatly I found the trees stripped of all their fruit. I purchased some from the supermarket for them rather than have to explain to them how adults behave in this world.!

It was only two weeks ago, I observed four British people stealing Arum lilies from the Socrates Hotel garden in broad daylight. Admittedly the Hotel is in a sad state of disrepair, but I gave them one of my withering stares nevertheless.

Well, I was informed today that someone actually ''nicked'' the soil from a graveyard after the grave had been dug.....I know the bags of soil here is a tad expensive, but that just about takes the biscuit.

Just a thought, I wonder if it was the ''pot nickers'' who took it to refill the pots ????????????????

Seeing as so many of the graves have already been robbed over here what difference does a bit of topsoil make?

Next Brit visitors to the Riverside complex in Lapta, look out for some human remains scattered around in the Christian cemetery nearby. I saw a GC jawbone and femur last time I was there, and guess what - they look just like ours. And I'd put any money on TCs having nothing to do with the desecrations.

And not only in Lapta, olive logs gone missing from the garden in Karakum between the 2nd and 4th. Unfortunately all the people who visit the house regularly did not get together immediately when it was noticed they were missing. I find this exceptionally sad people are taking things from others and due to the fact where the villa is situated someone must have seen the tree had been trimmed due to storm damage and come looking. If the thief is reading this by the end of the month we will have cut up the large branches you did not take so it makes it easier for you to walk away unseen and unheard again! But hopefully this time you will be seen.

I see the lynch mob has already declared this crime the work of Turkish Mainlanders... I think we should be careful not to jump the gun.

Terracotta pots are not the easiest thing to turn into cash one would think...

Sad, bad and sick, all thieves. It is like those who claim that it is okay to rob banks, they can afford it, or tell you, you can claim on your inusrance if you are robbed. Who, in the end, do they think picks up the cost, you and I by way of higher costs or premiums. If you are thief, don't try to justify it. At the end of the day it is going to cost someone - usually good honest people.

Phil msg 28,

I wish it wasn't true but that was the scene when I was last there. The remains may have come from a coffin which was exposed and visible after the marble plinth had been slid off to one side.

The worst desecrations I've seen are at Davlos, on the way up to Kantara (can't remember the Turkish name). The graves have all been smashed to smithereens. I'd say a tracked vehicle, tank or 'dozer, was used.
