PLANS for a £12 million private marina at Küçükerenköy look set to go ahead after the Supreme Council of Monuments gave its backing to the scheme.

The Council had thwarted two previous applications for the Port Cyprium project, because of the historic nature of the area and the need to protect its archaeology.

Developer Altan Hüseyin is delighted at the change of heart, after leasing the area in 2005 for a 49-year period. He had threatened to sue the government if he had not been granted permission for the scheme to start.

He told Cyprus Today work would start early in 2009, by which time the end design could be decided upon and permissions need to start construction won. Mr Hüseyin had previously offered £250,000 to pay for archaeological work and ensure no valuable artefacts were lost. He has already funded an archaeological survey of the sea at the marina site.

“They opened the way for the construction of the marina. The decision will be published in the Official Gazette
