The guy has been a great servant to both club and country. And the free kick he scored at Old Trafford will always,in my opinion, rank as one of the great sporting moments. But i honestly believe that we need to move on now, and plan for the future, which is the next world cup.Is it really realistisc to expect David Bekham to be considered for the 2010 world cup.If the answer is no then why on earth is he being picked, when there are younger players out there like Lennon and Bentley that should be playing, Paul.

No one is ever satisfied with England. When they play well and drop 2 points its moan and groan, and when they play poorly against a pub side and score 5 goals its moan and groan again. I just thank my lucky stars that I was not born north of the border otherwise all I could look forward to was another womens curling success.

Newlad..I believe Borats side hadnt scored in there last six matches and had conceded quite a few,and which side lets them score through a stupid school boy error ,ENGLAND. Capello new they had scored the moment Cole touched the ball. He turned away in disgust shaking his head and probably wondering "what the hell have Ilet myself in fore"..No wonder cole got booed fore most of the time.God help us when we play some decent teams....

Too many foreign footballers in the uk now. We've lost our identity as a football nation. We are trying to play European football and thats not what our game is all about. We were pathetic last night. Why did they play Heskey and not Agbonlahor from Villa? We've got to move forward and not backwards. Beckham is the best crosser of a ball in the world - bar none. However we should be looking for someone else to replace him now - but there is no one around.

I'm one of the opposite camp... I believe that the good foreign players make British footballers play better to keep their place in the first team.... I'm not in favour of quotas as they are like positive discrimination... OK some of the top teams are populated with foreign nationals but that means the clubs can't find a good enough UK player for the team... it's tough but eventually British players will up their game.... I hope....

Turtle..One of the reasons I think is we have far too man y foreign players here and alot of them are past there sell buy dates, living on there past glories.Consequently ourclubs are abandoning there youth policies and we have no youg blood coming through and we end up playing british players in our international side who are past ther sell buy date. Thjey have definately got to start blooding some of tese youngsters in our top sides so we can have an international side that can compete with the best at any level...

The top and bottom of it is there are two many foreign players in our leagues.I also think that the pride thing has gone.Pulling on that once famous jersey maybe doesnt mean as much anymore. And why should they be paid when they play for their country it should be seen as an honour. Gerrard and Lampard cannot, repeat cannot function when they are playing in the same team. Both are good players but not in the same team.David Bentley should be allowed to carry on Beckhams roll.Lennon and Walcott are also the future.Belarus will be a totally different kettle of fish and i think we will see a more composed team out there, Paul.

Beckham for 2010. no-one else as shown any promise in that role and until they do, he should still be in the squad. He came off the bench last night and opened up the right hand side again.... provded the cross for the last goal, an even skinned a full back, one of the only times I've seen him scin anyone. MC

Beckham can only ever now be used as a squad player if only for his expierience. Remember Lord Teddy of Sheringham, just use him when we have to. There are a few decent players in the under 21`s but whether they will get their chance, who knows.

Paul, this may help you. Since the league recommenced in 1946, the vast majority (87.4 percent) of non- English players came from the ‘Celtic fringe’ of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. Of these, the Scottish contribution, which amounts to twothirds (68.4 percent) of all foreign players, was by far the largest. Most (65.6 percent) of the Scottish recruitment took place in the 1950s and 1960s and involved nearly every club in the English league. After the 1960s, the volume of Scottish and Irish signings declined until it eventually fell below that coming from overseas after the mid-1980s. During 1976–85, there were 71 footballers playing in the English league from mainly Europe. During the first period, which lasted from 1946 to the late 1970s, the market was restricted to those who held British passports, or retained the right to take up employment in Britain without requiring work permits. For the period 1966–75 there were less than 20 foreign footballers p

Andy [message 3] It wasn't Man U players who won the World Cup for England, it was West Ham. Only one team had three players in the 1966 final [okay, I know you were only 4]. One team had the captain [Saint Bobby Moore], and only one team had the goal scorers Sir Geoff Hurst[the first hat trick in a final] and Sir Martin Peters. Consistently the best England player of the past few years.... Joe Cole or perhaps Rio Ferdinand. Just hope Capello makes the best use of Wayne Rooney, or if he can get over his injuries, Dean Ashton [okay next year!] Regards Arthur

With England reserves playing in Belarus on Wednesday a victory is not assured, even though the bookies are offering 1 to 3 an England win. The value bet, in my opinion, is backing the home side at 7 to 1 (draw no bet) with boylesports. It may not be patriotic but it is a good chance of making some decent money. Michael

New lad My point is that it's survival of the fittest.... Man U's and other Premier league club's British players' fitness has improved no end as a result of having to prove themselves against some of the best players the world has to offer... even within their own teams squad... It's evolutionary and that's why the Premier League is the envy of Europe now... It build tough, fit and professional players with the wining attitude that has seen UK football become so strong in the last 20 years... The record of UK clubs stands as testament to this... This can only be for team England as it gives the manager a much better list of players to pick from and more depth, which is why are able to argue about who should replace players and play makers like Beckham... at least there is now a raft of young players coming along... Where did somebody get the idea that the football academy/youth squad system has been abandoned?

Paul Joe Cole is also missing as well as Cashley. England look pretty weak at the back with Bridge and Upson on the left. With Gerrard and Lampard probably starting, this could be very difficult, with Belarus only losing by the odd goal in Kiev.
