hey,

im coming to north cyprus in a couple of months to visit my mum, does anyone know or had experiance of bringing a guitar with me? preferably as hand luggage or to be stored with push chairs and stuff as mine is pretty expensive and wouldnt like to see it thrown about by the baggage handlers.

or even better maybe someone close to karsiyaka has one cheap tehy wanna get rid of, would only be after a cheap acoustic to last me the 2 weeks im there so not wanting to spend a lot on it as it will prob be stored in the garage till i come out again. any suggestions/info would be most welcome.

also im flying woth pegasus and coming out 29th of june if that helps.

You'd better phone 'Pegasus' and ask them [re. your guitar] if you can stash it 'cabin baggage'. Personally, I wouldn't trust them, even if your guitar is in a hard case.

This ain't so funny if it's YOUR guitar!!!

I've got a 6 string accoustic/electric 'Washburn', as new condition in case, [new price was £1200] - yours for the absolute bargain price of £300 - not a penny less!

Call into 'Ronnies Furniture' if interested.

Having flown all over the world with a variety of guitars I can offer the following

Only usr the hold (Check in) if in a hard case (Hiscox liteflight etc) and the guitar has a Maple neck.

If the guitar has a mahogany neck carry it hand luggage in a gig bag and smile very sweetly at one of the cabin staff and ask them to stow it in one of the buisness class wardrobes. They will suggest using an over head locker but just explain that it is too big................

This always works for me

Use a hard case, with plenty of 'fragile' stickers and book it in separately as fragile hold luggage.

I have used every other way including once having an overhead locker assigned purely for my guitar but unfortunately all of the options previously mentioned are rarely available especially if you are flying with a budget airline.

Always try to avoid putting guitar in the Hold. Unless it is a heated hold.

The Guitar neck, is very likley to suffer damage due to extreme temperature changes. IE somtimes minus 70.

You can normally book an extra seat, It is actually reffered to as a G seat. (Guitar seat)

Somtimes people book them if they have alot of excess baggage, because it can work out cheaper to get the baggae KG for the seat than pay £ 8.00 per KIlo extra.

But if you value your Axe, avoid an unheated hold.

i just came to the check in desk, booked my cases in and as the lady pressed the button to send them on their way, i said - my guitar is on as hand luggage isn't it ?

she said it was up to the cabin crew....

When i got on the plane o told the cabin crew the check in lady said it was ok to bring my guitar in the cabin - they put it in a special cupboard....

i flew with Gulf air......

first off thanks for all the replys, mum said you lot on here were helpfull lol.

300 for the washburn is a little out of my price range but cheers all the same ;-)

the gig bag and sweet smile was more my thinking as if i bring my ovation in a gig bag (as its pretty light) i can plead with them that its too fragile for hold.

as for booking another seat..... id rather book that other seat for a 1 way trip for me for another trip ;-).

also was thinking of maybe just buying a travel guitar instead but will have to see what funds i have spare before i come, was only an idea to rid the boring nights while im there and only 2 weeks so im sure i could go without anyways. thank's all .

blazingbod - I've travelled dozens of times with my guitar in a gig bag, haven't had any trouble at all. Just take it as a carry-on, if there's no room in the overhead bins (which there usually isn't) the cabin crew will stow it up front for you to pick up as you leave, never had any trouble with damage etc.

I wondered where the phrase "air guitar" came from,

I have never put a guitar in a gig bag, always used a flight case myself and carried it on as hand luggage, if there is no room in the overhead lockers the flight crew have found somewhere to put it safe.

Put it in a gig bag and you'll be fine, take it on board with you. Put it in a flight case and it'll be checked in. The brand of the guitar wont make any ruddy differance, often flew with a guitar between my legs in a soft gig bag. Safe trip
