Paul, you know as well as I do, they are getting ready for direct flights. Just as we've been saying for a little while now.

Will that be in conjunction with the water pipeline?

ILS is Instrument landing system and DME Distance measuring Equipment. Effectively this will allow planes to land in bad visability whereas today if there is fog they have to divert. They are also planning a new runway

I couldnt believe that they havent even a DME - even some small airfields in UK have them! Ive my PPL and wouldnt fly to an biggish airfield abroad unless I knew it had ILS just in case - never could get to grips with DME!! 3rd world definitely!!!!!! And then you read about the controllers not talking to one another! Not that a plane should be low enough over the north to get in the way of one leaving or landing at Ercan, but using mark 1 eyeball is sometimes insufficient!

Here, here, and there is a mountain range to get over. There was a serious crash at 'old Nicosia airport' years ago. I used to fly regulary in and out of Guernsey. A place where you can have a howling gale and fog at the same time!! Hairy scary without ILS! and ilegal if you are out of your flying limits.

Done ACI a few times too !! Need to keep the power on or you get sucked down with the downdraft at about 150ft on approach, then take off power just before touch down, if I remember that was on runway 08 ??? GCI was 270 and 090, so I think it was 08. I flew for 12 years in the Channel Islands so had quite a few moments!
