Hi Smithy here

I moved over here nearly 4 years ago, after coming over for holidays every year, I love it here, but being on my own find the socialising was better for me when I was in the UK and working, apart from that I am happy here.

I plan to move here before Christmas..........permanent just depends when my property is finished. I have a meeting today to find out whats going on........

I want out of the Palm Bay view project and buy a fully completed property in TRNC. I have viewed some amazing bargain properties this week fully loaded.

After waiting nearly three years for my apartment and its still not finished I just want a property to move my clothes in, turn the TV on and crack an Efes....pop pop job done!

As a Turkish Cypriot I live full time in Famagusta and I even enjoy some of the nonsense I come accross at government offices- I just throw it back at them and give them a telling off too. I get my way almost all the time, they have no other choice with me and I enjoy every bit of it.

As the name implies - the2ofus are here full time . Moved out here June 2007 and so far no regrets (apart from family but skype and webcams help there). Same as everyone i expect we are concerned about rising costs and also the recent problems elsewhere re recession if it were to bite here.

Here at least most of the time with this weather we can "Always look on the bright side of life " (except when there is a power cut ha ha ).

We have lived here for 3 years... Getting there yavas, yavas... Waiting for our first normal electric meter reading... Builders electric since Oct 2005...

"Permission to Purchase" approved 24th Sept... Not yet reached the Land Office.. Hope it doesn't take another 3 years... House on koçan next target...

Wouldn't go back to the UK for a "Gold clock"...

Hi harita

When you said you have been on builders electric since 2005 are you in a villa or apartment just to get a idea how long we might have to wait in the near future.

Hi brandy sour...

We are in a bungalow on the edge of Ozankoy village... I suppose you could call a villa... It was a resale built in 2002/03 ... All hunky dory... Don't believe it ... But slowly getting things are done which should have been done when the house was built... The koçan for the land is in the previous owners name & should not present too much of a problem to get the names changed now our PTP has been given the green light... A few more problems yet to be resolved but will get there... Good luck with yours but it takes time...

Won't totally give up the UK when I retire, despite "Golden Brown" [Wyn's best mate!!]. Too attached to my roots, my favourite Turk, St George, my home footie teams West Ham Utd and Southend Utd!!

Intend to spend more and more time in NC as I wind down to retirement. Beaurocracy in NC drives me nuts, but is more than made up by the stunning sunsets and breathtaking scenery. Also have to say have come across nothing but politeness from the people of NC despite the fact my Turkish is minimal [thus far]. I sincerely hope NC stays as charming and [relatively] unspoilt as it is at present.

Still on building site, on builders electric, tankered water. You would have to drag us kicking and screaming out of here.

Personally not been back to UK for 2 years but like most women the boss has been a couple of times.

Ten years, the wife occasionally harkens to go to Malta but as there is only one beach on that island and only one small hilltop at M`SADA Cyprus still wins out.

my sister in law and hubby live in malta, in gzira, it looks good but is not a bed of roses.

even though they joined the eu, they don't seem to be in eu mode yet and as a foreigner things are hard.

they have a big house and wanted to convert one floor to let as a holiday apartment. they were refused as only maltese can do this legally.

also i think you can only stay full time if you have a certian amount of funds coming in from an outside country to keep you.

personally we have been a few times and i don't like it that much. (fat kids and pavements full of dog c--p. )

if you do decide to go, i will give you their email.

We have been here full-time one year 3 November, it has gone really quick and `hubby` has settled just a bit more than myself, I have had 3 visits back to the U.K since last November, we both love the place and the people and were lucky with our builder etc., but I still have very strong roots back in the U.K.

do you think it is easier for men to settle here ,more so than women?

my hubby is always out, coffeeshop, kebab ect. he has many more friends than i do.

a lot of the time i find i don't have much in common with tc women. they are always at home drinking coffee, gossiping. i can't be bothered to do that, its really not me.

i do have cypriot friends but nothing like the amount hubby has.

maybe he's just a nicer person? or he's not so fussy with his friendships? lol.

I think you could be right, it is likely that men find it easier to settle, my other half often just pops out for a pint (and I don`t mind that) I also like the odd G & T, but I would not just pop into a pub over here on my own, in the U.K. I did because there was always female company, here it seems to be mainly couples or men. My other half certainly knows more people than I do, and they are all nice folks, perhaps its just me, and I should make more of an effort to meet new people.

maybe we should start a ladies that lunch type thing. get us all out and about a bit more?

i hate having to go back to the uk on my own. once i went to a chinese restaurant and this guy invided himself to dinner with me! you can imagine what i said!

another time a guy i was sitting next to on the flight asked me if my blue eyes were real? how uncomfortable was that! plane full no other seats, and this creep next to me all the way to turkey.

what is it about men who see a woman on her own and think she is fair game?

maybe thats why i stay at home a lot, lol!

Speaking personally my friends are my wife's friends too. Obviously there are "girlie/boys" events but with two very young kids you generally rub along with each others' buddies as you're all in the same boat.

My friend who is married to a T.C. long time goes to a lot of events

locally, and has taken me to some, i.e. charity coffee mornings/sales/markets

and church. Mostly ex-pats who have lived there ages but few locals & you

can buy some interesting locally made stuff. There are also auctions. Other friend goes to line-dancing!

yes pike i don't disagree we have loads of mutual friends who are couples. but i don't find i have much in common with the wives. cypriot women (not the uk cypriot women) have had quite a different up bringing than english women, so i often find them hard work. but i do try to understand them.

for instance, watching a fashion program on tv, models are modelling underwear. catwalk sort of thing, nothing different from whats on the shelves in m&s in the south or the uk.

both tc friends sat there and called the models natasha!

all i thought was not to peg my undies on the line as this is what they might think of me,lol.

now i know why my elderly neighbour is convinced that i'm a russian!

Hi Fire Starter, I think your suggestion of starting a Ladies who Lunch is a fab idea. I believe there is already a Ladies group on the island who meet up but I think it ismore like a Ladies Circle, luncheons and charity stuff, bit to posh for my liking.. I am more of a Girl who does Grub lol.

Maybe we could start a separate thread and see how many women would be interested in just meeting like minded women for a coffee/wine/efes and a good old natter once a month. What do you think??

RE msg #1, fire_starter : (...) How many of you live here full time? i am interested to know as cyprus always looks so empty in the winter. (...)

===> By Godfrey! You got some answers. And now what?!! What's your next silly question? When do you usually switch on your washing machine? And if you don't, why not? Or what?

We spend half our time here and half our time in Beverly hills but hope to spend all our time here as soon as we can sell in Beverly hills.

I am amazed so many people live so close to each other but either don't know this or keep themselves to themselves ?

There must be meeting places or get togethers with brits on a regular basis surely ?

The two of us have been here nearly 3 years and we love it despite the occasional frustrations we all come across, but there are these things everywhere in the world to some extent. If there is one thing I dread it is the possibility of having to move back to the UK which makes me really enjoy life here to the full. One of the funniest thing I have seen is the "shoe shop" in Lapta on a Sunday morning which is a car covered with pairs of shoes for sale. There are lots of things here to make you smile.

Good to see such positive postings about life in North Cyprus. You don't realise how lucky you are, lots of us are still just dreaming about the sort of life you are now living. One day ...........

I think there may have been even more expats living near me but, they are missing belıeved lost after dısappearing ın the swamp they call kanalısasyon here. Top tip guys - provide duckboards or a temp foot path when you decide to abandon your UNOPS-funded project for a few days.
