Hello everybody.

I think most now know a lot of good restaurants, and there have been plenty of posts. So how about a list of good restaurants which are recommended during the winter months. A lot of the ones popular in the summer become dead in the winter - so it would be great to get advice on establishments which remain popular out of season - for example Niazis in Kyrenia always seems busy year round.

Let the list begin.....

Cenap has an enviable reputation so on peak dates book in advance 821 8417.

Hi Perry

re the Hidden Terrrace, going east on the main coastal road out of Girne, passing the Peace and Freedom roudabout keep going past the Oscar's turning, about 300yards before the Courtyard turn left by a small supermarket.

You will see the sign there on the main road. Follow the road down till you see the sea ( about 800 yards.)

regards

I agree with tervetuloa, also on a winters Saturday evening, Achmenia, they

have a roaring fire, and Arrif provide really good music. Must book though,

it is used by a lot of locals, which in itself is a good recommendation

The Old Grapevine just up from the Coloney is great for the winter season, they have just extended there seating area for the winter and it looks great. Abit of steak pie and the warm open fire will warm you up when cyprus turns alittle chilly.

Archway Zeytinlik the best in my opinion.

Pasta Mania. On the the road up to Karaman very good pasta and pizza.

Both restaurants always very busy.

A very good sign in quiet periods.

I agree with Little 1 The Grapevine is a really authentic N.C. restaurant.

The food is always beautifully cooked well presented and more than enough to eat.

My Wife recommends the steak pie,and I like everything on the menu especially the beautiful young " Liz. Hurley" who is very often there.

Always good: THE VERANDA seaside restaurant in Karaoglanoglu (opposite GAU junction), summer time outside, winter time next to the chimney. Best steaks in TRNC, wide food selection, NO traditional mezes, fresh fish (depends on season), kleftiko, schnitzel, very nice starters. - upper price class ! Good food for money!

Cenaps for traditional meze and kebap, Niazis upper class meze, more society place. Pizza King for veryyy good pizzas!

Am sorry to say after my visit to the Grapevine last week that I think that the quality of the food is not what it was and I'd consider myself a regular there so will be giving it a miss for a while. Efendi's is always good as is the Archway and although pricey the Saint Tropez deserves a mention. So too does Cousins Hidden Garden if you don't mind driving for a half a mile on one of the unfinished parts of the Girne bypass.

For entertainment value try the Trypiti in the harbour, there you are charged the alacarte price for the set meal menu ordered, when you complain, they call the police and kick your guest before you pay.

Can any other harbour restaurants beat this, a perfect end to a Saturday night out.

I know - I have already booked up several trips next year - and the villa feels like home now. Only trouble is, work gets in the way - and working in the private sector (with a defined contributions pension pot) it looks like any thoughts of early retirement to Cyprus have gone out the window :-( Still plenty of holidays to look forward to and great places to eat (winter and summer !!)

Thanks to all for the great information !

Last winter in Esentepe the Esentepe Restaurant, Antique and the Esentepe Villa Hotel where open and Rosies was closed. The other two restaurants were only opened this year so don't know if they will open in winter and another new one they are building is close to being finished.

I know several have said Niazis but the secret place is Niazis Takeaway. Best direction, along the main street of Girne, go all the way along and at end on right is a gated mansion which is the owner of Cypri Cola. Go past and up hill and Niazis Takeaway is on the right. Parking is fun but take first right and you should be ok. They serve usual Cypriot main courses with a free salad bar, great value.

Past the supermarket, down on the bottom road is Hatties Cafe, very good food.

I would also think that the Tumba will be open over the winter period.

Take any left turn and you will come to the road that runs parallel with the supermarket road. Turn right and keep going for 2 or 3 hundred yards and you'll see it on your left.

Cenaps best Meze on the on the island , they are more creative than the usual run of the mill meze's you get everywhere else.

Niazi's great upper scale impressive, but if you want to sell your first born , try St Tropez no kebabs.

Does the Corner bar still do meals, trhe German guy there used to have some really nice meals and great music.

Sele old town Girne.

Italian, there used to be a real romantic place right behind the harbour cant remember the name, beautiful building. what was the name of that place and is it still open?

Lilli, hi, not sure if we are talking about the same place, the place i am referring to was two levels, top level was on the main one way street then down the winding path would bring you to the lower level, they had a beautful garden with ceiling fans in the garden.

Very very nice building. Not the one on the other side that next to the steps .

If this is the place, I am regretful I never got to eat there. You must have had special reasons for giving up such a gorgeous place.

Tere was a small parking lot above and if you looked over the wall you could see the tables on the lower level.

Your menu looks good for New years eve,

Are all the menu items listed served or is it choices of either or? also would have been more tempting to say trifle with caramelized sugar. Instead of the gelatin and fruit

Keep my fingers crossed that I can make it over in the next two weeks.

Turbo I think the restaurant you are talking about could be Set Italian. Went there first in 1996 and then again in 2001 - same menu both times, ok but nothing fantastic about the food. Beautiful setting though.

Have been impressed with the Old Mill since Sarah took it over, Good food, tidy restaurant, friendly staff (even though they are Chelsea & Spurs fans) best to book on a Sunday as it's normally very busy.

Someone mentioned that Jan has closed up and moved back home, no one mentioned why. Is he ok?

Was it anything to do with is health?

I liked that place, he always had the best creative food and music and very friendly crowd.

Sorry he's gone, so what happened to him?

Hi Turbo, I spoke to the landlord last night as he is also our landlord and he told me that Jan just locked up It would appear and I am not sure and do not wish to start any rumours that his partner went of to moldovia leaving jan to run the place. Spoke to 2 of Jans good friends who told me he has gone back to germany his health is good. Our landlord hasnt got a key and knows the electric will be turned off which is in his name so obviiously he is very worried and doesnt want to break in so who knows maybe he has only gone for the holidays i hope so.I dont know where the rumour on another thread started that its being taken over by british people. Thats all I know. Take care and hope to see you Lilli xx

Old Mill in Ozankoy cannot beat the atmosphere (only place with life at the time of the year) and the food and staff are great
