Did anyone notice the shopping list between Asda and Tempo on page 17

of this weeks Cyprus To-day? Add up the two columns and you will find it

hasnt done Cyprus any Justice.

Hi Daffy

Can you give us some figures. Was it comparing like for like i.e UK brands compared to UK brands or UK brands compared with Turkish brands?

It was comparing brands from Asda in England, with the same brands

to be found in Tempo here. They list all the prices, Asdas price came to

76. 88d. while Tempo was 104. 88d, but when you add them up,

Asdas was correct, while Tempos adds to 61. 86d. which puts a different

complexion on the camparisions. I did phone Cyprus To-day, who said they were aware of the error.

I thought it was pointless excercise really if you buy the same brands here as you would in the UK (i.e imported into TRNC) then you expect to pay more!!!

Buy local where you can and support our local economy!!!!!

IF you are living in NC why are you comparing prices at Asda if they are same brands then you are paying for the import of them it always cost more.

Hi Daffy

What we must be careful with is the price it says on the product, ie

I went into Starling to get some Vanish Oxi stain remover and it had a large cardboard sleeve on it saying the price was 9.95ytl As I needed it I took it along with my other products to the till, and when she put it through with the bar code it came up as 15.30ytl I pointed out the big yellow sleeve around its neck, her answer was this is the price whats coming up on the till, she called the Manager who says AH this is a problem and put it back on the shelf so the next person would just buy and not query it, and I left without it, I then went to Astro and picked up the same item and yes it came up with 16.45ytl. So beware whats on the label is not always the price you get charged.

Having returned to England after spending the summer in Ozankoy the point of this posting is very evident.

The cost of living in Northern Cyprus is now as expensive as that in the UK, I know the exchange rate has impacted on the cost of the Lira and this will correct itself when the pound strengthens against the Lira as Mr Brown starts to sort out the financial problems of Europe and the rest of the World.

The frustration I have about the cost of living in Northern Cyprus is that it goes up when the pound is week and goes up when the pound is strong!!

At some point the message must get through that just like the wells in Lapta the well contained in the average Briton's purse is also drying up resulting in many Brits selling up.

Some may say so what, and if they do they will live to regret taking their customers for granted.

Is brittan not an Island that imports goods and seels them at a reasonable price ?

It would be interesting to price 6 everyday items imported into the uk and the same items imported here......................

ANY ONE ?

It wouldn't really be a comparison Nigel. I would imagine that Asda has a little more bargaining power than say Lemar.

Most processed foods, cereals and things generally not in the locals' diet are more expensive. How many TCs do you see tucking into a bowl of cereal? - it's more likely to be cheese, cucumber, olives and tomatoes for breakfast. Things like bread, raw vegetables, flour, eggs and milk are cheaper in TRNC even compared to South Cyprus.

Anyone who has bought efes in Tesco will know it's much cheaper in TRNC. You can see where my priorities are.

I think you have all got the wrong end of what I was putting forward.

Cyprus To-day ran an article giving comparisons between Asda prices in England, supplied by someone from Lapta, with the prices of the same articles here in TRNC, which they added up wrongly, if you read the article, you will see they made the Cyprus prices 17per cent more than the U.K. price. If you add the two columns up yourselves, you will see the Cyprus prices are actually lower than the U.K. prices . They have made a mistake in their maths and have not done justice to North Cyprus. I have been living here 4 years and have always found the prices acceptable, although we don`t always buy U.K brands, but if we fancy them we buy them, and people will always compare prices. Hope this clarifies it for you.

most things are cheaper in the uk. the only good thing about the uk is shopping!

we went back on business the week before last. i did have to pay for excess luggage with cta as they are pretty hot on it right now. it still works out cheaper than buying here or in the south.

Firestarter,

We don't find most things cheaper in the UK... so how do you come to that conclusion? What shopping items are you are buying in the TRNC on a regular basis that is more expensive here than in the UK?

when we were in the uk, our shopping was as follows.

computer parts, clothes, shoes, sportswear, telephones.perfume, choc's.

t

we ate out every night and it was about the same price as eating out here in the trnc.

we were in sainsburys and we very suprised at how cheap stuff was. chocolate, cans of drinks , deodorant just your usual stuff.

the only thing i think which is cheaper here than the uk is council tax , water bills and petrol.

car tax and insurance are now higher here than the uk as are most things.

i think the price hikes here came about after the introduction of the euro in the south. prices in the south went up so prices in the trnc increased to keep up.

Few weeks ago on similar thread ,I took the time to compare the shopping basket in Cyprus Today with the same items in Tesco and printed iit in this BB.

The results backup what fire starter says.

It showed the prices in TRNC to be I think about £25 compared to £20 UK.However most of the difference was taken up with with two items, butter and something else.

One could say you could shop wisely in trnc for the same cost as in the UK, but certainly not less. Also one needs to buy more than food and toiletries.

By the way, the Cyprus Today prices only used imported items when no other choice available. Where it becomes cheaper in UK, is promotions sales, buying in bulk, cash and carrys ,Lidl's.

The real killer in north cyprus is electrical goods, and anything to do with DIY,as in B&Q.and electric costs.

Have not seen a similar comparison between north and south ,but would be interested.

Nunu, exactly my point, how can the locals (how about the villagers) survive on the high cost of living.

I am shocked at how fast TRNC caught up with EU prices, so I guess someone is buying or the business's wouldn't make it.

I am concerned about retiring there when the day comes, will my pension be enough?

the locals secret is they eat loads of veggie meals. have their own chickens to eat and for eggs. they have sheep for the milk for helim and also kebab.

also remember they get a lot of different pensions from the goverment and retire at an early age.

thats how they manage!

We spotted this error too. What worried me most was that the report was sent in by a school head-teacher...one would think a teacher might have checked his sums.

yeah Daffy, made no sense at all. Cost of living is really high though for here and all is blamed on importation. Most stuff could come from Turkey as they are pretty self sufficient so why bring in from other countries? However I'd be willing to pay for Polish kabanos, Italian sausages, French quisine and english savoy cabbage, parsnips, swede etc: Really miss them.
