Do other people share my frustrations about some English and German dog owners here in North Cyprus?

Clearly I do not mean all dog owners and I do not include the local TC dog owners (that is a different issue completely).

But some English and German dog owners seem to act in a totally irresponsible manner or exhibit a "don't careless attitude" towards other people living here.

We live in Karsiyaka and the road outside our house is a simple track and there is no pavement. Therefore there a number of people who regularly walk their dogs past our house and around the areas of scrub land.

But why do they let their dogs leave piles of smelly dog waste along the track and/or infront of our house and garden gates? Why do they never stop and move it or clear it away? Have they never heard about carrying plastic bags or a "poopa scoopa" with them? Why can they not take it home with them? Why should we have to contend with smelly waste covered in flies?

Not long ago one owner noticed what his dog was doing outside our house, looked at it again and simply turned round and went home the other way to avoid passing our front door.

We had an upsetting incident today. A German woman who has probably never trained her dogs (because she clearly cannot control them) and never has them on leads was passing our house. One of these four large dogs saw our 16 year old cat on the front door step and decided to charge into our garden and attack it. It definitely managed to get hold of the cat - we think by the throat and back legs.

Although the cat did get away it fled before we could see where it went. It took us half an hour to locate it in a neighbour's garden and it was clearly too terrified to return home - and it is now having difficulties walking.

Did the woman care? Of course not, she carried on walking despite all the howling from the dog and the screaming from the cat.

Why cannot people train their animals and act more responsibly

So sorry about your cat i hope it recovers. If you can locate the homes of these offenders shovel up the dog mess and deposit it on their doorsteps and see how they like it.

You have to confront these people there and then and have it out with them face to face. In the UK I saw a dog leave its house and go into the nearby park where it had a dump. It then returned home where it was let in. Out stepped I and pointed out what she had allowed her dog to do and the fact that young children, including my own, used the park. I gave her the chance to pick it up but she ignored me. I then called in the police who interviewed her and her neighbours and gathered enough evidence to give her a caution. This was in a posh area where appearences are everything. A couple of months later she sold up and moved away.

Teach these selfish idiots a lesson they won't forget!

I had problems in the UK outside my house and I

- put notices up - nice ones at first and then much firmer ones after that. Some which stated 'toxicara kills and/or blnds our children'

- took a camera outside and started videoing them when they came with their dogs

- told them that their dogs had fouled showed them where it was and asked them to pick it up.

I received some abuse but in most cases they did not come back

One guy ripped all the notices down so I put more up.

Lilli - it is the same here in Bavaria. I thought when I moved here that the people would be clean and disciplined, but they are a shower. Dogs crap anywhere, they wouldn't dream of picking it up.

A while ago a large dog jumped over our gate and had a dump on our lawn. The owner stood outside the gate waiting for the dog to finish. I shouted to him to take the dump away with him and he refused so i picked it up and walked to his house and posted it through his letter box. Result. Dog never dumped near my house again.

Funniest thing I ever saw was sitting in car park having lunch . Lots of Reps did the same. Brand new car comes in and parks near mine. Next a beat up estate car stops and man and dog got out. Rep in new car told the guy to keep his dog away from his shiney motor. Dog pissed on shiney new wheels so the guy got out and climbed onto the car bonnet of the old estate car and pissed all down his windscreen. Dog removed. Result

AJ Msg 9,

Seems you're the only one on the thread who supports the s*** rather than the people trying to get rid of the s***. ;)

I know what you mean. We came here with 2 dogs from the UK so when there was dog mess on the estate guess who got the blame??? We always go out armed with bags to clean up after them so we had to ask the construction company to make us a couple of signs to put up asking people to clean up after their animals. Boy did that get people's backs up - and yes, the ones who's dogs made the estate a foul place to walk (we ended up walking on the road) were the ones who shouted loudest BUT it did work. Except, we have one delightful neighbour who's dog is so completely unruly they find it amusing when it pees all over peoples gates and footpaths. Correct, it belongs to one of those with the big voices who complained at the signs. Now all we've got to do is stop the neighbourhood cats using peoples gardens as litter trays and we'll have a nice, clean estate!

I also live in Karsiyaka and I'm sick of people driving down to the (now closed) army camp, parking their cars and taking their dogs to crap.

We have to be very careful when walking now because the dogs just 'dump' everywere. And yes, the majority are English.

Why can't they do it in their own area!!

I had a neighbor who never walked his dog,he would just let his dog out to do his thing and come back when finished....the dog kept having his dump outside my front gate..

I picked it up with a shovel and left it in front of his front door few times..that was the end of it.

I have two large dogs, and i drive them up to the hills twice a day, every day, for their daily exercise and they have their dump there..

paul

Try my method...find out where they live and deliver the s*it on their front door...it always works..

A friend of mine's granddaughter was blinded in one eye after playning in a park where dog excrement had not been picked up.

It's disgusting.

When I was in Switzerland (checking my secret accounts ) the parks in Geneva had exclusively doggy areas where they played and did their business. Possibly this goes on in other cities and areas, but what about in Cyprus? There's enough dogs and vacant land to make it work, at least.

We have dog wardens here. A woman used to come with a pack (literally - about 10 Bichon Frise - sp?) and park opposite our house by the river, let the pack out her estate car, they ran scaring the swans and other river fowl - and left poo everywhere on the bank and in the cul-de-sac. I rang the warden and told them what time every morning this woman arrived - the next day - the warden was standing behind the hedge - watched the mob running wild - spoke to the woman - I was watching from behind the curtain :o) - never saw the woman again! I caught toxoplasmosis when I was carrying my daughter - the gynae said I probably caught it gardening (I have never been a cat person - prefer dogs) and as we know - cats poo and wee in any garden, bar their own - my child could have been born blind or damaged in other ways - there was no treatment available - I spent months in fear of the unknown........

We have exactly the same problem in Ozankoy, for some reason people seem to use our pavement/road as a dogs dumping ground and the majority of the people are English! I have two young children and have tried the putting up signs all around in English and Turkish but it makes no difference. It is just so disgusting, they know they wouldn't get away with it in the UK so why do it here! I am constantly picking up crap from our garden and we don't even own a pet! What is wrong with these people, it's behond me.

Whilst not condoning the acts described in the posts above by dogs. I aggree they should not be allowed to happen. But I think that some slack should be given to dog owners. I suspect that the majority of compaints originate from non dog owners and by the same token the majority of dog owners have taken in strays or rescued dogs. These dogs do not have the social graces that properly brought up dogs have. We have three rescued/stray dog that we have had long enough to teach them. Others have not, but give them time. We have taken in these dogs because we can't look away from distressed animals. If people like us did not take in these poor animals, then there would be a even bigger problem around the streets incuding dustbins being knocked over for their food content and even more diseases spread about. For message 23. We walk our dogs for their and our exercise, not for what you describe.

Message 25 - surely the object of this thread is to encourage people to clear up after their dogs? Not about whether a dog has been "trained" to poo on demand or whether or not the animal has "social graces", but to ask owners to do the right thing and clear up their animal's mess?

Yes, you could be right message 25, as you say; "These dogs do not have the social graces that properly brought up dogs have," but what about the owners, don't they!!

Just because they take in stray dogs, does that absolve them from all responsibility in picking up their crap??

Yes, it is very commendable to rescue animals but please walk them in your own area if you are not prepared to clean up after them.

As I said, these owners 'drive' (not walk) down to our area and deliberately let them 'dump' anywere without picking it up.

We like animals, we had a dog in the UK but we cleaned up after it. Don't be selfish, think of others!!
