I was asked today if I knew anyone who could volunteer to help out in the Nature Library (part of KUSKOR) in the centre of Kyrenia. Help is wanted by someone bi-lingual, preferably Turkish Cypriot who could give one afternoon a week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to be there for callers, either on the phone or in person.

If you could help, or can introduce someone else who can, then the contact is Damla on 0542 881 3750.

this is a great project set up with help from European monies, but most of the volunteers are wonderful Brits who cannot help the Turkish speakers.

PLEASE - maybe there is a student out there who would have the time.

Marion - I am the custodian for the magnificent sea shell collection of the late John Dundas Orr. His book ' Seashells of Cyprus' is currently for sale at the 'Roundhouse' in Girne.

I have been trying, in vain, to find a 'home' for this worldwide collection of beautiful and rare shells, all labelled and housed in mahogany cabinets, in separate drawers. This would be a donation.

Would the Nature Library be interested?

There is also a good number of conchology books to go with the shell collection.

What a wonderful offer. I have passed it on to Robin Snape the project leader of the turtle projects here who is also involved with Kuskor and the Library. I know the space in the Library is limited at present, sohow much space might be needed. as soon as I hear from him I will let you know, but you do not give an e mail on your details . so, could you let me know the best way for you to be contacted and I can pass that on.

Thanks. sounds a wonderful offer - and now all they need is that volunteer.

That sounds excellent, Marion!

Gavin - you already know where my 'concrete tent' is! In terms of space: hadn't you better come for a quick look at the shell cabinets before carting them away and finding you don't have enough space to put them?

Just not today, as it's ANZAC DAY, and we're going to a function at Brinsley's pad!

Roy,

I do indeed know where your lovely home is.

Could you please give me some approximate measurements of the cabinets... it's my car I'm thinking about rather than the library.

Marion/Gavin: the cabinets stack neatly on top of one another - they were designed, purposely, to do so.

You might mention to Robin [we've never met] that I was in 'Greenpeace' and on turtle watch at Lara Bay in Paphos.

Msg 9./ You certainly won't get them all in your car in one trip - I might be able to arrange a Transit van. Fortunately, most of the shells in the drawers were packed so they wouldn't move around too much when we carted the whole collection from Paphos. The cabinets need to sit level to prevent movement of the shells, though - that's why we should really use a van.

Msg 9./ Gavin, there are 5 cabinets - each measuring 45x45x46cm, and 1 set of drawers without cabinet [will explain] 50x40x35cm. I'm not sure as to the dimension(s) of the shell classification books - I'm guessing the same as about one shell cabinet.

Marion still needs a volunteer!
