Three years ago my dog found a baby bird with no feathers at all and its eyes were still closed. It was a sparrow.

I phoned the RSPB in the UK and was told this:

Take the baby bird inside as it will not survive outside as it is too young. Put the baby bird in a little bowl with a tissue underneath.

Soak some porridge in WATER only and cut up some sultanas very small and soak them also in water.

Also mash some cat food.

Hold the bird in one cupped hand. Using a very small kiddies paintbrush put a tiny bit of porridge/sultana/cat food on the end.

Touch the bird on the beak and it should open its mouth.

When it does, CAREFULLY put the porridge over its tongue down the back of its throat - just like the mother would.

DO NOT EVER put food underneath its tongue or it will choke.

You have to do with about every 20 minutes during daylight hours.

The day after we found our bird, we found another bird!

Cont.....

When we found a baby robin, we left it awhile, but no mum flew down to it - and we couldn't see a nest - so we rang the local pet shop to ask what to do, and on their advice bought some wax moth larvae. The bloke told us to feed it every couple of hours (which we did, day and night) chopping up the larvae, also some mealworms and some cat food (after a few days). We used tweezers to feed him tiny pieces, and put him in a shallow bowl, on shredded loo paper and kitchen paper, in a box, and put a loose cover over the box. After some food, we waited a little while in case it came out the other end, and removed that as his mum would have done. We gave him water dripping off the end of a clean paint brush (artists brush) as recommended by the pet shop. After a week or so, we found a place near Bracknell that looked after wild birds until ready to fledge - and took him there. The lady rang and said he had survived and fledged and she watched him fly off - plump and looking good.

Try using a fishing net or pool net to catch it.

If it is so sprightly, then it can't be so young as a nestling bird (without feathers) can't move about very quickly.

If you do catch it, read my last message. It might help.

Our sparrows are called Jack and Jill. They are completely tame and very happy indeed.

Jack sings along to the hair dryer and absolutely LOVES Phil Collins' music!

Hope all this helps.

my friend has told me she cant see the baby this morning, but if she does , she will try to catch it, she will put it in a box high up on a ledge over a door.....hoping that it will be fed by mum...if not then all the above will be the next plan

You are interfering with nature and natural selection. If you watch any of the nature programs, they never interfere with the way the animals live. They just let them be. They do alright all by themselves.

There is a lady at Belapais who takes in damaged wildlife and looks after them and releases them back to freedom if they make a recovery. If you catch the bird, you will have to take it to her and if you require the information, email me and I will give you her telephone number. Best wishes to you and the bird.
