Just back from North Cyprus Kyrenia, weather was great and only rained as we were leaving on the plane (hooray).

We had many meals by the harbour and on the outskirts of town some good some okay, bu it did seem that nearly every meal including the Meza all came with chips !

Yep but they are 'Cyprus chips' and if you do not like chips 'per se' then you can always ask for rice. I am not a great chip fan but North Cyprus chips are the best.

happy feet..We had a lovely holiday in Crete this year and we only had chips on the menu twice in the 2 weeks we were there. You nearly got trampled to death in the charge on the 2 days they were on the menu. Its a long time for us brits to go without our beloved chip. At least you had a choice of saying no to chips. Hope you can see the funny side of this post, glad the weather was nice for you on your stay...

At our hotel people were asking for bangers and mash/ liver and bacon/

Why do some people go on holiday abroad if all they want to eat is english grub all the time and turn there nose up at the local cuisine, they might as well stay at home sit under a sun lamp and eat egg chips and beans !!!

Chips are not served everywhere in the TRNC, though they are in most of the places where tourists go, because unfortunately, that is what the average British tourist wants. As for McCain oven fries, in 15 years of visiting the TRNC I have only ever seen them in a supermarket and that has only been happening over the last couple of years.

Not all restaurants who serve meals with chips actually serve Cyprus potato chips. Some of them serve the frozen variety.

You can't blame them serving chips with everything as the

Brits. like them so much. Yes, the N.Cyprus chips are good

but I personally would not like chips served with everything

I order! (Trying to keep the weight down)

What happens if you order just chips? Must confuse the hell out of the kitchen staff.

Hey they want chips... what shall I give them on the side? I know chips...

I have similar experinces with most cypriot restaurants automatically serving chips and quite a few offer no alternative or bring them out anyway.

I think Cypriot potatoes are excellent cooked almost anyway EXCEPT Chips.

My partner and I think the chips here almost without exception are the worst we have ever had never crisp usually soggy and often too cold. I guess either the local variety of potatoes don't suit cooking as chips or they just don't know how to cook them well (its the same in Turkey as well).

I much prefer Potatoes backed boiled or mashed and its a pity they don't use them these ways more often (which are also much healthier as well)

For the record I love most Cypriot food and just think they should stick to the traditional stuff and forget the chips unless you ask for them. I hate wasting large amounts of food by leaving unwanted chips.

I adore chips and I have to say the chips tasted in NC are excellent - always fresh and hot. However, when I do get sick of them I order a salad. I like Groucho's message (no. 13) - quite amusing!!

I also found a problem with the chips, which I am not that fond of anyway. It seemed that even saying......no chips......yes, I know they come with the meal......it would be wasteful as I am not going to eat them.........no, neither of us want chips.........we still got chips!!!

Yes AJ best chips but lousy roasts. Give us King Edwards any day for crispy outside and fluffy inside. Haven't had a decent roast since arrival but then I am very fussy. My tats are to die for, yeah I said TATS.

Cyprus potatoes can be used to make fantastic crunchie roast potatoes....

Try this method....

Peel and cut as normal.... enough for 4... for us that's ... well, loads really...

Cook in a microwave for about ten minutes in a loose topped microwave plastic dish.

Then let them cool slightly before tipping away any excess water... be careful the water will be hot....

Then put back the lid and shake them a bit to distress the outer durface of the spuds... this will encourage the lovely crispy roasting that we all love...

Then put a relatively small amount of cooking oil in a roasting tin.. I use groundnut oil but sunflower will do too... about 125 ml..

Add the distressed potatoes to the tin while it is still cold (do not pre-heat the tin or the oil - it's not necessary, it's likely to cause accidents with hot oil sponking over you and it ruins the effect).

Cook in a hot oven for about 30 mins until they've attained a lovely well roasted hue and that's all it takes.

In addition to post 23,

Spoon the small amount of oil over the spuds with a spoon to make sure all surfaces are coated...

Turn once during the roasting....

Turbo,

No, they cook in their own juices in the micro and it adds to the finished flavour..

How about Cypriot New Potatoes, the ones grown in red soil, you cant get anything like that anywhere in the world.

Just bash them lightly(so they crack) and then keep tossing them in a bit of olive oil till they brown and cook, yum.

i dont know if you get the Yukon Gold over there, but they are so rich, you don't need to use butter when mashing them.

Then there are the "Fingerlings", the closest we can get to Cyprus New potatoes.

When we first opened the Hut, only one of the items on the menu came with chips but we were bombarded for requests for them so we added them as an optional extra! This way you order them if you want them and are not given them as matter of course. seems to work very well

Yeah why don't they have a line on the menu saying, "Please ask for chips if you want them with your meal"... That way they get eaten

On a diffrent subject but still food, many of the restaurants we went to kept on giving us toasted bread, when we didn't even ask for any?

Is this just some ploy to add another item onto the bil.

some places gave us free lovely bread or rolls, but toast NOOOOOOOOO

Most definitely. Can you get blue cheese in NC. It could be the deciding factor if we choose to live there or not.
