What on earth is this present incumbent Government doing, or as is the case, not, taking advantage of a huge opportunity from the present unrest in the Middle East and North Africa which have become 'no-zone' areas for EU tourists to visit outside the expensive € territories?!

New airline, where and when? All lies!

Increase import taxes on all produce & products!

Creating an open xenophobic atmosphere for any new potential overseas investor/visitor in whatever form to stay well clear!

Look at Turkey and see how they are capitalising on this present climate by the huge amounts of money been spent on media tourist advertising. I wish them luck for their foresight!

With a one £million budget with half a dozen multilingual computer literate Civil-Servants who know what work is; I, with draconian, autocratic, authoritarian powers, put myself forward to resolve and save the 'TRNC Tourist Industry'! I await the call! Is there anyone out there listening!

Msg 7&8

I'm not quite sure that the government just only dislikes foreigners, they do a damn good job of penalising the not so bright, poorer true TC's who are, maybe not so 'worldly-wise' but still live with good old fashioned TC values, getting shafted as well!

Slightly off topic but a friend of mine (tc) Was admitted to hospital last week and told he needed an operation on his heart urgently. He had an enlarged aorta that would rupture at any time. After three days rest he decided to go to turkey and see a specialist there. Nothing wrong with your heart he was told just high blood pressure no op needed. No way to treat a local is it?

It is not simply a case of bad management or "government" failure on the subject (although both are very valid in TRNC). There are two main obstacles in the way of improving tourism in Cyprus:

Number one is the lack of "Direct Flights", and number two is the inability of the so called travel agents, hoteliers and the airline industry (?) to bring tourists in, over a much longer holiday period outside the Summer and New year seasons. This in turn boils down to lack of investment for this kind of activity by both the government and the individual entrepreneurs (who really should have been doing more!). If we had 2 million tourists coming in next month due to current political situation, do you think we can really accommodate them? And if we were to build another dozen 5 & 4 star hotels of Cratos' capacity, what will happen when the political situation changes next year?

To get more tourists N Cyprus has to offer something that is more attractive than other Mediterranean resorts. When I first visited 11 years ago, that would be competitive prices and comparatively unspoilt . Also the people were so friendly and helpful you could overlook much the country's shortcomings eg dodgy electric. Nowadays much of that has disappeared and though we have a property here I do not feel that I can sell the place to people I know with any enthusiasm.

A lot needs to be done before NC can compete with other places. Who wants to see rubbish all over the place and tracts of unfinished properties? Even getting here is somewhat of a problem as the prices of fares, even going via Larnaca are generally quite expensive. We fly from Manchester and rarely manage to pay under £200. We also go to Tenerife on a regular basis and never pay over £100.

I am not saying all the above are down to thet government but until they are addressed NC has no chance of competing successfu

Even though I have lived here for a number of years and had previously been coming here on holiday, dating back probably 25 years, I can't imagine why anybody would want to come here on holiday now. It's far too expensive to get here and the environment is rubbish - in every way. Like every aspect of government here - and I use that term loosely - there is no planning of any kind and while that situation continues, the holiday trade will simple continue to dwindle. Very sad but, I'm afraid, inevitable.

Why don't all you moaners, doubters and all round cynics go somewhere else instead of infecting this board. Maybe you would like to try living in Syria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, The Ivory Coast or even Southern Cyprus if the North is so bad.

I thought not!!!

Well Silverfox.... it's people like you that is slowing the pace of progress. If you don't complain then nothing gets fixed. Why compare TRNC to the countries you have mentioned, it's very easy to compare it to a country that is currently going through change, why not compare North Cyprus to other more established and stable European countries? Why shouldn't people expect more from their government and country?

Quite frankly, keeping quiet about it isn't going to bring tourist to the North and if people highlight the issues and someone in government can take note and listen then maybe the North can reach the standards of what we expect from a holiday destination. I do blame the government and it's about time they stand up to their obligations and listen to the people, otherwise Silverfox, you won't be comparing North Cyprus to Syria, Libya, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.... You'll just be another country added to that list!

Now people have been telling me that prices have been going up though I must admit I had not noticed this until yesterday. Having checked our Supreme shopping bill I discovered that I had just purchased a locally grown melon (kavun) which cost 10.95TL per kilo......thats over £4.

Yes I returned and queried this, only to be told that the price was correct.

Next time I want a melon I will get friends to bring one out from Sainsbury.

The problems facing the tourist industry as highlighted above are sad but true. In order to attract holidaymakers, bearing in mind there is a lot of competition, the island needs to be good value for money (for both the holidaymaker & the tour agent), safe for families, easy to get to, a pleasant landscape, good beaches and have attractions for the family to name but the basics. How many of those does the TRNC tick the boxes?

Cyprus is a minimum 4 hours flight to the South plus 2 hours coach transfer, forget flying to the north at the moment (6 hours flight time for a start) which already puts it at a disadvantage where there are great well known destinations 2-3 hours away.

Is it good value for money these days? I don't think so when looking at restaurant prices or if in staying a hotel resort, the drink prices can be exorbitant.

Good beaches? Just look at what's on offer (or lack of it) and the rubbish.

What attractions are there?

That's the whole point, why should they work at anything when their nepotistic paid positions are protected with a big, fat pension to look forward too after 25 years of idleness!

Is there no end to the efforts of some Brits on this board to damage the TRNC - where we all are only guests? Is there really no reason to look at TRNC in a positive way once in a while (and enjoy your life here instead of the daily moaning and whinging)?

I pity the moaners. I like it here. And above all: it is their country.
