Message 3,

Your point is a very valid one in my opinion

The three strikes and your out method would work for me, rather than closing the thread.

For goodness sake, this is getting ridiculous! why can't threads just be allowed to run! does it really matter if it goes off topic? sometimes a more interesting topic may superceed the original one!

It's only people having a conversation! as long as there is no abuse, what does it matter, this is only a forum, not a life/death situation!

Perhaps AJ wants us all to give up and sod off?????

Some 'mods' just delete a particular post, letting the thread to flow allowing a natural death of the topic. Others don't!

It all depends on who is getting the flack as to whether or not a topic is closed, no change there then !

Fine

I am more than happy to step down as a moderator.

From this point on there will be no more moderating for me.

Dear AJ,

I will NOT email you to discuss this topic. I started the other one.

It's a very simple reason as to why I will not email you. You are a FA, you can always have the last word, as you have the power to close threads. I cannot have a discussion with someone who will tell me life is unfair, use another board, etc. That is not a discusssion, that is being dictated to. Let's have the discussion here?

It's like discussing something with a teacher. You have to be "right" even when you're not. When you were one of our peers, everything was fine.

You are an intelligent guy, why can't you see how you need to sit back, relax, check out what the other FA's do regarding misbehaving children, (sorry members), then you will get a lot less stick. I know you do not mind getting stick, in fact, I believe you quite enjoy the attention.

Anyway, time to close this thread.

Aj.i am really sorry if i upset you.that wasnt my intention,i do think you do a good job i just think you close to many threads without a good explaination,i know some threads do go off topic or gets abusive and all i was sayin is .wouldnt it be better for the other members if you just deleted their posts (as i know that can be done)then the threads could continue until they died a natural death.please dont give up as a mod,

I've never met AJ in person but have spoken to him via email numerous times and he was always very helpful but as far as his moderation skills go you can forget it, they really were piss poor ) but we love him really.

Mabe you could offer your own services as a moderator. 4 or 5 hours a day unpaid and I have no doubt that you will please all of the people all the time.

First casualty is AJ, so who will be the next Mod to feel 'The Force'. Who knows, give it a few weeks and all the Mods may resign and then what will the board become ??

Just a thought

Not aimed at you personally but, therein lies the problem. Those who do the job get remorseless abuse and those who give the abuse are not willing to put themselves forward. AJ has come in for abuse because he spends considerably more time than other mods on the board, doing his 'job'. Now that he has gone, it will be interesting to see:

1. If anybody volunteers to take his place.

2. Whether that individual does a 'good job' - and of course, a 'good job' is purely subjective as to whether that mod pleases everyone all of the time ;-)

3. Who will be the next moderator to feel the wrath because I have no doubt that one of them will cause 'displeasure' somewhere down the line.

Personally, I have a degree of admiration for AJ to have stuck it out for this long.

I agree again with you Paul you cant help but have a degree of admiration for AJ and you cant please everyone all the time but there is a right or at least a better way of conducting the role of moderator, and in my opinion AJs character is not cut out for the role. That dont mean to say he is a bad person in any way.

I don't care either way whether AJ stays or goes, what I would like to see is explanations and how that explanation was met when closing a thread down. I found it infurating yesterday when I was writing in reply to another thread being closed that, that one had also been closed within 3 minutes of my writing. No explanation just closing down. To say "this thread is off topic or served its purpose" is not good enough for me. I want to know how the moderator came to that conclusion. As has already been said posts will invariably get back on topic because someone always makes sure. Even a polite intervention on the thread firstly would be suffice then we would all understand later if that dosn't work.

As far as whether anyone should volunteer to replace AJ I believe all moderators should be replaced from time to time, say every 12 months, then people can see who is good and bad then those that are good will eventually be voted in everytime and there should be no more moaning.......cont..

...cont. Also is it really the case that AJ is continually moderating or is it that the others are taking a back seat and letting him do the moderating all the time. The last time I looked you cannot even contact No1Doyen as he has no e mail address to contact him on. If its not a level playing field then I would agree its not fair on AJ to keep taking the flack.

AJ,

I was away from the internet since Sunday morning until a moment ago. You may resign as a moderator or take a back seat for a time if you like but you are not the person I know that would resign after a few irresponsible posts. It takes all sorts to make this place lively and active and surely you can take such nonsensical criticisms in your stride.

Please stay and have a rest whenever you like but resignation is not an option. The only way to get rid of a mod is a vote by fellow moderators and I am sure in a vote of confidence you will come at the top of the list. You are most criticized because you do most of the work, as simple as that.

Please stay.

ismet

Message 31 why don't you, I'm not interested in the job, what I've said is perfectly reasonable to ask for explanations when closing a thread. What's wrong with that. Why we're on it, give me an explanation as to your sarcastic remarks which is also whats wrong with the board when people like you can't simply reply in a civil manner.

I hate to see anyone leave, this board is made up with characters. We live in a small place and members living here we all seem to know each other. I for one would hate to see AJ go. Most of us deseve a ban at some stage.AJ we spoke about it yesterday and you were upbeat. Maybe take the comments on board but please do not leave us to open the gates for trouble makers x

Although reasonably new to C44 I have enjoyed AJ's input and would add my name to all the others requesting him to remain as a moderator.

Amazing isn't it, that the most frequent posters are often the most critical of the moderators and yet not one of them has volunteered to take up a post of a moderator ! Is that because they are too afraid of being criticized ?It can't be that they do not have the time because they often post on every topic even when they have nothing constructive to add to that topic?

AJ and I have a few debates on this board and is perhaps guilty of not answering questions. Early on as a moderator I felt he did abuse some of his powers by closing threads when he did agree with some of the postings and personally did not like some of the people whom were making the posts, very few of which did break forum rules.

Being a moderator, I would imagine, would be very difficult to get the balance right between posting as a moderator or as a forum member and I think of late he has done a good job of doing what is at times a thankless task. It would be a shame if decided to not return to the forum, however the forum will always be bigger than one individual.
