I have just lost my adorable 2 years old Siberian Husky 'Rocky' to a snake bite on Saturday 30th April 2011 and want to try and help animal lovers avoid the pain and suffering we both went through. Saturday Morning 10am Rocky was playing in the garden - He came running to me with a small drop of blood on his snout.. Within 10 minutes his face was terribly swollen and he was in pain. I immediately got him into the car and drove the 35 minutes to the vets. When we arrived he was bleeding from the mouth and nose. The vets (Pet Life behind Starling on Bellapais Road - thank you Sybel)were amazing, injections, intravenous etc etc it was like a hospital emergency room. All that could be done was done. They explained that theys had 5 similar bites in the past 10 days - albeit none fatal.

Rocky went home at 5pm to rest but unfortunately passed away at 10.30 pm. There is a powder avail from vets or chemiststo keep snakes away 'YILAN TOZU. BEWARE SNAKES ARE PROLIFIC AT THE MOMENT

In built up areas, look out for agitated birds, they will give away the location of the snake every time. They flock over it.

Something that these snakes fear is the black snake. Keep one of the near by and they will run a mile. The trouble is they look just as bad, but they are not poisonous.

I am so so sorry to hear about your poor dog, and my thoughts are with you x

My dog was bitten by a snake and had to have 4 days on anti venom drip and several injections, but thank goodness for the staff at Petcross, they saved him. He was in a dreadful state, head, face and neck swollen beyond recognition, but I am pleased to say well on the way to full recovery.

Other snakes might fear the black 'Whip Snake' if confronted, but they certainly will live, or circulate, in close proximity to them. I lived close to Koukla, the river running through the valley, and we experienced much snake activity in our garden - the place was seething with all types. 'Our' black snake was a 3 metre beauty, who lived in a hole in the dry-stone wall we built. In the same wall, about 10 metres away, was a 'nest' of blunt nosed pit vipers - nasty!

As far as I'm concerned, admittedly only having lived in Cyprus for 30+ years, your statement is a complete myth - a 'Kojakari' [old wive's] tale!

I am so sorry to hear about your Rocky.

I came with my sister in laws that day and met him for the first time, dont know whether you rememeber but I asked what has happened. He was in a bad state bless him, I was nearly in tears when I saw him. Your husband said he'd not long got off his drip and you were on your way home.

I couldnt even imagine what your going through, I have three and would be heart broken if anything happen to them.

Also nasty but not deadly are the straw/yellow Mediterranean centipedes, our dogs get bitten frequently by these. I got bitten last week by one which was in my clothes and had a very bad reaction, swelling, fever etc. They can climb vertically and are very quick.

Re venomous centipedes. They are not technically centipedes as they only have 40 legs, Turks call them " kırk ayak"

this picture shows yellow/black colour but ones I have encountered are always yellow and large, approx. 2-4inches long. Usually in rural areas, especially around Kaplica along with their scorpion friends in the summer.

We use SPIRA powder from Lemar which does slow them down a bit and eventually kills them but they actually have to contact with the powder which means sprinkling it around the house and leaving it there. Looks a mess but effective. OUCH.

Thanks Delikomsu. We are learning all the nasties to be on the look out for and forewarned is forearmed. Is Spira powder ok with dogs?

Yes, dog friendly and doesn't harm lizards either which is great because they eat a lot of nasties too.

There are snakes at the moment at the beach near the night club at Karşiyaka. It looked to me like a brown blunt nosed viper which is poisonous - I managed to persuade my dog NOT to play with it! So So sorry for your loss no words can make you feel better only the memories of the times you spent together can give you comfort. xxx

Any one out there ..... can you tell me the situation re snakes and cats?

I've been told that snakes do not like the presence of cats but I'm not convinced. I have 2 cats but I am particularily worried about my 1 year old as he is still 'learning' what to do and not to do!! Life is an adventure for him and he spends lots of his time an the low mountainside just behind our villa.

There are many, many incidents of cats being bitten by snakes, and depending on which snake bites the cat, the cat's survival chances can probably be rated at 50%/50%.

Even the most venomous snake first asesses its own 'danger level' when striking and can inject as much, or as little, venom as it choses, depending on the circumstances.

In the case of the Cyprus 'Blunt Nosed Pit Viper', its favourite meal is the Cyprus hare. It coils itself up [like the steel spring apparatus on a pull-start small (lawnmower) engine] and uncoils with tremendous speed and inertia as its victim passes.

A builder friend of mine in Paphos had this happen to him whilst shifting a stack of concrete blocks - fortunately, we got him to hospital in time and the correct ant-venene was administered. Eighteen months later, he told me he still had considerable pain in his leg.

The only other snake in Cyprus, from my experience, that is capable of killing a cat, is the 'Montpelier'.

Google these two!
