I have just lost my adorable 2 years old Siberian Husky 'Rocky' to a snake bite 10.30am on Saturday 30th April 2011 while playing in the garden. The vets (Pet Life behind Starling on Bellapais Road - thank you Sybel)were amazing, injections, intravenous etc etc it was like a hospital emergency room. All that could be done was done. They explained that theyd had 5 similar bites in the past 10 days - albeit none fatal. Rocky went home at 5pm to rest but unfortunately passed away at 10.30 pm. There is a powder avail from vets or chemists to keep snakes away 'YILAN TOZU.

Imagine if this had been a toddler

Please be aware that SNAKES ARE PROLIFIC AT THE MOMENT as a result of the recent wet weather. AND do not listen to the rubbish that some snakes are harmless etc. A venemous snake is unpredictable in its bite. A lot depends on how recently they have used their venom. A non venemous snake can cause blood poisoning.Best advice - any bite - GET HELP ASAP.

Vets and Chemists will also stock (and sell) anti venom for emergency treatment at home

Please get this powder and sprinkle it around your garden perimeter - snakes wont cross it (make sure youve checked the garden first or you may trap one inside!)

So sorry to here about your dog, how awful for you. Could someone tell me the signs to look out for if your animal has been bitten. I don't have a dog, but have cats, and would assume the reacton would be similar.

our kitten was bitten last year. you cannot see the bite at first because of the thick fur but they will literally be screaming with pain. our kitten crawled onto the settee but couldn't lay on its tummy. the site of the bite will swell but it takes several hours to do so.

How terrible, I am so sorry to hear about your dog. One can only hope that our dogs have the sense to back away from snakes if they come accross them, my old boxer wouldnt back down from anything and had to be dragged away barking and biting at a blunt nose viper on one occassion, we were very lucky it could have been such a different outcome.

Thank you for posting the warning so that we might protect our pets. x

Brian, Can I just say sorry for your loss and that you have had an awful experience.

Can I ask;

Where can you buy this 'powder' and is it effective?

Doe's the anti venom have a short shelf life?

Thanks

Thanks for your response janjin. it was a local TC who told me about the powder albeit after Rocky died. I dont know how long it lasts. The anti venom must be stored in the fridge and has a use by date etched onto it. It usually has quite a long shelf life (about 2 years)

Sincere condolences - losing a pet is like losing a memer of the family :o(

As a matter of interest, the snake deterrent you mention, presumably it's safe for all other animals?

As far as I know anti snake venom is different for each type of snake bite.

But isnt there only one snake here (blunt nose viper) which is capable of causing death from a bite?

Good morning.

Does anyone know were we can purchase the powder - is it the Vets?

We don't have pets so we don't know any Vets.

Thank you.

Administering anti-venom and atropine are done differently. So while many of us were carrying atropine because of the poisoning these past few months and we were prepared to simply inject the fatty muscle, anti-venom has to be administered intravenously. I think many of us are assuming it is a simple task.

Point number 13 on this website explains another consideration as well. http://www.wikihow.com/Survive-Being-Bitten-by-a-Venomous-Snake

I hate snakes! I won't go out of my way to harm them but I have zero love for them.

Bevhills, so sorry and I know there are no words to comfort you. Thank you for alerting us as sometimes news like this is what prevents us from becoming complacent.

Stellastar - message 10. Rocky was playing in the garden next to a rose bush. He was always chasing lizards and I thought nothing of it. He made a small yelp and then came running over to me. All I could see was a small spot of blood next to his nose. I thought hed caught it on a rose thorn so I took him to the pool and washed it. He whimpered a little and then went inside the house. My wife came out immediately and said there was something wrong with him. When I loooked his snout was already beginning to swell (after just 5 minutes) By the time I got him into the car he was bleeding from the nose and mouth and in pain. In hindsight (I am a trained paramedic ) and should have treated it immediately as a snake bite. Kepp the patient as calm as possible - seek immediate help and if possible try a torniquet to prevent poison circulation. Never ever try to suck out any poison. Mozgor I dont know about the powder - I was toooooo late

I don't like snakes but I won't harm a black snake as they eat vipers (so I'm told).

Hi, so very sorry to hear about your dog, I have been to a few chemists and asked about this powder Yilan Tozu but no-one seems to have heard of it, I would be grateful if anyone has any information as to where to obtain it from. Regards Lesleyb

Msg 10, you would be lucky as snakes are scared of cats. 5 years ago I witnessed it in my own garden. I couldn't believe it when I saw the cat walking towards it and the snake moving from the ground to the wall!!! But of course do take precautions.
