It was umpteen years ago, me and my pal Phil were at an “open mike” night at the Crispin pub, in Stourbridge – Phil had a small recording studio and did “jingles” for radio stations and always fancied himself as a bit of a music expert……

Over the course of the evening, there was a couple of requests for “Bob” to come up and sing – eventually up he came, complete with long hair and shaggy perm and sang along to the acoustic guitar, singing “stairway to heaven”

Phil turned and sniggered “he’s not bad, but he shouldn’t give up his day job” !

Later on in the evening, Phil is looking for potential singers for his jingle company and collars “bob” from earlier in the night, offering him 15 quid an hour

“sorry but I’m pretty busy at the moment” Bob told him – to which Phil rather cockily replied “what too busy to earn 15 quid an hour, just for singing – and who knows where it may lead ” ?

Seeing that Phil was digging himself into a hole, I pulled him away and said “don’t you know who that is” ?

“no” replied Phil

“its Robert Plant, he lives round here”

and what did he reply ? - “who’s Robert Plant” ?

A true story.

mess 6 - just for you Bob.....

It was probably 1976 and the place was the local “Heron” Rolls and Bentley dealers on Halesowen bi-pass…..

Sitting in pride of place in the showroom was a brand new maroon Bentley convertible.

In walks a guy in his early 20’s – long hair, flairs and a brown velvet jacket, who politely asked the salesman for a test drive….

“come back when you’ve got the money, son” he was told.

The guy leaves with his tail between his legs, only to return 30 mins later, carrying a large brown suitcase and proceeded to open the contents all over the salesman’s desk – dozens and dozens of bundles of ten pound notes and then says “ how about that test drive " ?

Test drive over, he buys the car with the cash - the salesman was subsequently told by one of the mechanics that the man, "Mr Bonham" was the Led Zeppelin drummer.............

A true story, me and my pal used to clean Bonham's cars when he lived in Newfield Road, Hagley….

Nick

I remember planty introducing the acts at the Plaza Old Hill in the early sixties, used to wear cut off jeans and braces he was always ambitious then.

He used to have a big american car at one time and went out with a girl who lived at the local chippy.

He still lives in Shatterford near Kidder and still uses the Anchor at Caunsel for a drink now and again, has a reputation has a bit tight but then if he buys drinks hes flash if he dont hes tight no win situation.

Nick msg 7 I think I am right in saying that John Bonhams last car was a pink Rolls convertible and that was purchased from his executors by a used car dealer in this area who I know,he advertisedit in the Sunday times as being the property of the late John Bonham and he made rather a lot of money on that car!!

I lived very close to them in Kidderminster Wattys, used to see many og them in the pubs including Simon LeBon, Ozzy Osborne. It was a great stamping ground all around the area in those days. x
